“We have guests!” Mrs. Compton hissed. “And you, young man!” she turned to Oliver. “Is that the way you behave in front of your girlfriend?”

My grandparents laughed at the scene while Oliver looked properly chastised. He turned to me and smiled softly.

“Later,”that look said.“Let’s meet at our spot.”

I nodded in understanding.

Nobody in the party understood that this was our last night as a couple. Tomorrow, when Oliver would leave for London, we wouldn’t be “together” anymore. We decided that this was for the best.

Our dreams were on the opposite sides of the world.

But for tonight, there was still us.

Later that night, after the farewell party started winding down, we met at our special spot on the hill, where we used to hang out. We had brought my puppy, Buddy over here many times as well. The little furball loved to play in the grass under the warm sunshine and Oliver and I often laughed at how cute he looked, chasing after sticks we threw or simply just rolling around in the grass.

We had also shared many kisses in this spot. In fact, this was where we shared our first kiss.

I had been so inept at that time and Oliver was nervous so we fumbled our way through it. We did get better at it with time and practice.

And right there on the top—there was a tree where we had spent many wonderful moments under. A few weeks after our relationship became official, Oliver had taken a pocket knife and carved our initials into the trunk.

So many happy memories here,I thought wistfully, running my fingers lightly over our initials etched into the bark.I wish I could just capture all those memories and keep them in a box so I could pull them out and relive them when he’s in London.

He drew me into his arms the moment we were alone together, holding me tight as he breathed in the scent of my hair.

“I bought you something to remember me while I’m away.”

I looked up at him and smiled sadly. “I’m sure I won’t forget you at all.”

“Just in case,” he said. “Here it is.”

He handed me a small box and my fingers trembled when I held it. It had some weight to it but nothing too heavy. It was wrapped clumsily in wrapping paper with hearts all over it—Oliver’s handiwork, I was sure of it.

I shook it a little and held it up to my ear.

“It won’t make a sound, if that’s what you’re thinking,” he chuckled. “Not much anyway.” He nudged me gently. “Go on. Open it.”

I carefully peeled off the wrapping paper to find a luxurious box in a deep blue color. The words “Soulmate by S. Oliver” were written across the top in fancy gold lettering. When I opened it, an exquisite bottle lay in a bed of velvet.

“I thought it was a little funny and appropriate,” he said, smiling softly at me. “The perfumer’s name is Oliver and we’re soulmates, Amanda. You and I.”

I looked up at him with tears shining in my eyes as I held the bottle close to my chest. “It’s beautiful. I love it.”

“I’m going to miss you so much,” he murmured. “London would be so lonely without you.”

I gave him a wobbly smile. “Who are you kidding? It’s an exciting place and much livelier than Georgetown. You would make so many friends there.”

He shook his head. “It won’t be the same without you.”

“At least you won’t have to deal with Elle,” I teased him. “Maybe that’s why your mom agreed to let you study a whole ocean away because she knew you were going to end up distracted if you stayed here.”

He chuckled at that and continued to just hold me close while I stayed there, savoring the feeling of being wrapped up in his arms.

For a moment longer, there was still us.

For a moment longer, Oliver was still mine.

But only for a moment.
