“What do you mean?”

“She’s a witch. How do I keep Jason and Lily safe from her? How do I protect our kingdom from her?” I stared pacing around him. Luke snorted, looking amused.

“Dean, you’re looking at this all wrong.”

“How the fuck am I supposed to look at it then? She’s a fucking threat. She could use magic to hurt Jason and Lily. She could help the rebels get a leg up and destroy our Goddess-damned whole way of life. She’s not a wolf, Luke! She doesn’t fucking understand. How the fuck am I supposed to deal with this when my wolf has chosen her as his mate? What the fuck do I do?” I ranted while I paced.

Luke gripped my shoulders and stopped me from continuing to pace. “Dean, stop fucking worrying about her being a threat to the kingdom. Stop looking at this from the viewpoint of a fucking Beta. Look at it from the viewpoint of a man who is interested in a girl,” He suggested. I opened my mouth to start arguing with him, but stopped myself.

“Who said I was interested in her?”

“Dude, you’re killing me. Do I need to smack you upside your head or something?”

“Okay, okay, I’m interested in her. How is that supposed to help me?”

Luke sighed, looking utterly fed up with me. “Okay, let me explain this in the clearest way possible. You are the Beta of Wolf Hollow. You’re also really good friends with Jason and Lily. She is a former slave of the Wolf Hollow Pack. She is a witch. She’s really good friends with Lily. Your wolf has claimed her as a mate. Why don’t you take this time to get to know who she is as a person? Also, instead of viewing her as a threat to the kingdom, why don’t you look into ways you can have her be an asset to the kingdom?”

“An asset?”

“Yes, an asset.”

“How would she be an asset to the kingdom?”

“I don’t really know, Dean, but we have used the resources we have at our fingertips, why can’t you guys do the same?”

“I…I don’t really know.”

“Well think about it. Sam is a witch and I’m a half witch. Instead of getting angry or suspecting her or me of trying to bring the pack down, we use our skills to keep the pack even safer. Now, we have one of the safest packs in the world and we’ve got additional resources that have increased our standing in the supernatural community. We used what we had in order to become better. Why don’t you do that?”

I remained quiet, mulling over his suggestion. He let go of me and went back to watching the area around us. I mirrored his stance, letting my mind wander and contemplate what it would look like if I took Luke’s advice. It would certainly help me stop from trying to control Amara and how she interacts with Lily. I knew I wouldn’t be able to keep her under the constant surveillance that I wanted when we got back to the castle and if Lily’s reaction to throwing her in the dungeon once was any indication, I wouldn’t be able to do it a second time.

I sighed, shifting my weight and finally giving in. It solved one of my biggest problems. Now, I just needed to figure out how to deal with the issue Lily asked me to look into about her sister and then I could get us back to the castle and deal with Jack.

“Boys!” Sam called us. We both turned at the sound of her voice. She waved us over and we approached the small porch she was standing on. “Alright, I’ve given Amara a little spiel about being a witch, but it’s been a long day for the two of you, so it’s time to call it a night.”

I nodded, the exhaustion I had been battling all day finally catching up with me. I felt like I could sleep for three days straight. Sam led us back into her home and offered Amara the bed. I was given the couch, which was definitely going to be a struggle, since I was going to be cramped, but all I cared about at the moment was getting some sleep.

Luke insisted Sam stay with him, so they both bid us goodnight and left. Amara and I stood in the middle of the room, staring at each other. The awkward silence grew and I could tell she was uncomfortable when she gave herself a one-armed self-hug. I chuckled, smirking at the whole situation. I didn’t know how to deal with this whole mate thing between me and my wolf, but I did know how to make this situation a little less awkward.

“Alright, I know we’re both exhausted. We’ve had an extraordinarily long day and it’s been an emotionally draining time. Let’s sit down for a few minutes and air some things out and then we can hit the hay. That way things aren’t so awkward between us. Okay?” I gestured to the couch and waited for Amara to sit down.

“Alright…” Amara said, sitting down and seeming suspicious. I nodded encourangingly and sat down across from her.

“First things first, I’m sorry for how I’ve been acting lately. I am one who obviously needs to be able to control things around me. You have been a big wrench in my plans and I apologize for all of my actions. It was inexcusable to treat you in that way. Luke has helped me overcome some of my fears and I am going to make a conscious effort to treat you better.”

Amara gave me a harsh look, but didn’t respond to anything I had said. I didn’t blame her because words sound great, but obviously, my actions were what was going to prove my intent. I decided not to push her for a response or answer and moved on.

“Secondly, I wanted to ask if you’d be open to helping me secure the kingdom?”

Amara scoffed and stood up, pacing around the small room we were in. My eyes followed the path she took, not willing to let her out of my sight. “Are you kidding, Dean? You make my life a living hell - put me in a fuckingdungeon- because you’re convinced that I’m a security threat to Jason, Lily, and the kingdom; and now you want me to help you secure the kingdom?” She ranted.

I shifted on the couch, understanding her confusion and frustration. “Amara, I’m not asking you to trust me right now. I know I’m going to need to build that up, especially after how I’ve treated you. I no longer believe you’re a security threat. There’s nothing I can do to make it up to you right now. I can only offer you what I have authority to volunteer. Right now, I’m asking for you to help me keep Lily, Jason, and the rest of the kingdom as safe as possible - not for me, but for them. I needed to be in control, but I have to admit that I’m not able to handle the security of the kingdom as best as both of us could.”

Amara threw her hands up then planted them on her hips and turned toward me, looking pissed as all hell. I waited patiently for her to yell at me some more. She growled, making me press my lips together in a vain attempt to hide my amusement. Amara glared at me and then dropped onto the couch, bringing her knees into her chest and wrapping her arms around them. “Fine. I’m not sure how I can help, but I’m more than willing to do what I can to keep Lily and the rest of her family safe.”

“I appreciate that.”
