Instead, I nod gratefully, trying to come up with the best way to break all of this to Malia. I’m already working on a speech in my head when I see Ren come downstairs with a frown on her face.

She spots me and heads my way, her eyes scanning Romer and Koda as she approaches us. I notice that she’s freshly showered and no longer wearing her ballgown, and I wonder what could have happened.

“Hey, have you seen Malia?” she asks. I swallow hard, not sure how to answer.

“Yeah, she’s in her room. The doorknob came off,” I lie. “We’re working on fixing it. I’ll have her come find you as soon as we get her out.”

Ren nods, giving Romer a curious glance before she turns and heads back to the ballroom.

“Who isthat?” Romer asks, his eyes tracking her as she leaves.

“Malia’s best friend. Her name is Ren.”

He nods, and I smile softly.

“She turns eighteen in a few days,” I tell him. He glances at me sharply.

He knows exactly what I’m trying to tell him, and he nods before he disappears down the hall after her.

“Go get your girl,” Koda says, before clapping me on the back and spinning me around again in the direction of the stairs.

I take a deep breath and rehearse my speech in my head as I climb the stairs and head down the hallway toward Malia’s room. She’s yelling for me to come let her out, and I wince as my wolf howls in my head, letting me know his displeasure.

“I’m here, Malia,” I call to her. “I’m going to fix the door now.”

“You mean the one that you broke?” she yells back sarcastically.

I put the doorknob back on and use it to open the door. It will have to be replaced, but I can at least get the door open now.

The door swings open and I come face to face with a furious Malia. Even in her anger, she’s absolutely stunning.

“Hey,” I say softly.

She crosses her arms over her chest, glaring at me.

“Hey? Really? That’s where you want to start?”

“Um, I’m sorry?”

Malia rolls her eyes at me, sighing in exasperation. “What the heck was that? I can’t believe you locked me in my room. Why? What… why?” she repeats, clearly flustered.

“I need to show you something,” I say as I start to remove my clothes.

“Are you kidding me?” she screams, whirling around and giving me her back.

“No, I didn’t mean… not that!” I say, closing my eyes in pain. “Jesus, I’m messing this all up.”

“Yeah, you are.”

I slide a hand down my face, knowing I need to push through this. “I’m not just a King,” I start. Malia peeks at me over her shoulder. When she sees that I’m not stripping anymore, she turns around again.

“What does that mean?”

“Koda, Romer, and I… we’re not just Kings. We’re also Alphas of our packs.”

“Pack? Alpha?”

“We’re shifters. Wolf shifters,” I clarify.
