It’s the night of the full moon, and I wonder if Malia can feel the mating heat yet. I never asked Koda how the mating moon affected humans or what his first time with Salem was like. I doubt he’s going to appreciate me bringing it up now, but I have to know.

“Hey, can I talk to you two for a minute?” I whisper to Koda and Romer. They nod.

Koda kisses Salem before he heads my way with a frown. I pace nervously back and forth in the hall behind the stage in the ballroom.

“What’s up?” Romer asks, shoving the last bite of cake into his mouth.

“I found my mate.”

“What?” he asks around his food.

“That’s great! Where is she?” Koda asks.

“In her room.”

“Why aren’t you with her?” Romer exclaims, staring at me like I’m insane. He has no idea.

“I haven’t told her about shifters or mates,” I start, though I know the problem is much deeper than that. “I need your advice,” I tell my friends.

“Even so, I wouldn’t let my mate out of my sight before I marked her,” Romer says. Koda nods.

“I’m not worried about that,” I tell them in an agitated tone, showing them the half of the doorknob I broke off.

“You locked her in her room?” Romer asks, his eyes wide with shock.

“Are you kidding me?” Koda hisses. “You gave me such shit for locking up Salem. You told me it was a terrible idea, and gues what? You were right. What the hell are you thinking?”

“I don’t know! I panicked. I thought you of all people would understand,” I grunt.

“Hold up, both of you idiots locked your mates up before even telling them about shifters?!” Romer exclaims.

“Shut up,” I tell him at the same time as Koda says, “Don’t judge.”

Romer holds his hands up, palms out in surrender, though the bastard doesn’t stop smirking the whole time.

“Go free her,” Koda urges me. He actually spins me around and shoves me toward the door.

My wolf is all on board with this plan, and I grit my teeth.

“What’s the mating moon feel like for humans?” I ask. Koda stops trying to shove me out of the hall.

“What do you mean?”

“I mean, how do I explain shifters to a human without freaking her out?”

“I don’t think I’m the one who should be answering that. I messed everything up with Salem. I’m lucky that she agreed to stay at all,” Koda says. I sigh.

“I know, but you’re the only one who understands.”

He sighs while Romer crosses his arms over his chest as he listens in.

“I told Salem about shifters first and then fated mates. It’s a lot for anyone to take in and I don’t really think that Salem believed me until the mating moon. Honestly, it might have been easier to just shift for her first. It might have freaked her out, but it definitely would have sped up the process.”

“Can they feel the mating pull?” I ask.

“Yeah, I don’t know if it’s as strong, but Salem…” he clears his throat, clearly uncomfortable sharing this information. “Yes. She felt it.”

Romer snickers, and Koda punches him in the arm. If my one chance at happiness with my mate wasn’t in jeopardy, I would make fun of Koda as well.
