Page 41 of Losing Control

"What are you doing with someone who could kill you for telling him 'no'? How can you trust him with anything?"

She grimaced. "I know it sounds cliché, but he wouldn't do anything to hurt me, I promise. He's… protective with me. Gentle."

"Like you're protective of me?"

Mykie smiled and took one hand off the wheel to lay on Caspar's hanging off the middle console.

"Yes. I guess I just got caught up in the fantasy of him that I wasn't thinking straight about how it might look to you or anyone else. Maybe that was why I was so afraid of my two lives at this point meeting in the middle."

Caspar squeezed her hand. "I just wish you were letting me in on the fantasy. I felt like such an outsider to your life suddenly, and I didn't know how to get access to you like I had before. We didn't really have a chance to build up our relationship normally."

"You still could have reached out to me. If you can't do that normally, how can I trust you'll do it when I need you to?"

"You're not the only one that has needed to figure out their life and didn't want to talk about it immediately, all right?" he muttered.

She held back a sigh. As much as she wanted to address his comment, she knew that it wasn't the time or place to do it. If he had something he had to talk about, he probably had a problem she would feel the need to solve. She realized now that while he didn't say it, she would need to build up trust between them again.

"I promise you that I'll keep you in the know, now," she said.

"And maybe we can put a rule forth that says you have to discuss new partners with me and anyone else you're with before starting something new? So, I don't feel so left out again?"

Mykie smiled. "I like that idea, but I'm not planning to bring anyone in that you don't know already, so this won't be a problem again."

She finally turned down the street of her apartment a few minutes later. "I just need to change quickly, so there's no need to have you grab your crutches to come up."

She put her car in park and got out of the car. She jogged up the stairs to her front door and then her apartment door before slipping quietly inside. She changed into black pants and a nice blouse, hoping the outfit was passable business attire. She threw her hair up in an intentionally messy bun, so it was out of the way.

She peeked into Jezebeth's room and frowned when she noticed the room was empty.

Did Jezebeth not come home again? She thought that Jezebeth was ready to come home, but was she wrong? Did she stay with Dexter again—

"Are you looking for me?" Jezebeth asked. She had a mug in her hand as she exited the kitchen. Mykie couldn't help but let out a sigh of relief.

"Yes. I'm heading to Harper and Co., but I didn't want to leave before I said good morning and goodbye," Mykie answered.

"Have fun. Don't do anything I wouldn't," she said with a wink as she walked past the blonde.

"I'll try to tone it down the best I can. It's Renly's father, after all."

"No. Way." Jezebeth grinned manically.

"Mhmm. I'll tell you how it goes after I leave," Mykie stated as she went back down the hall and opened the front door. Jezebeth had positioned herself in her usual place on the couch, the TV box laying on her chest.

It felt like things were getting back to normal at home. All she had to do was make this meeting go successfully, and she'd be back on the right track. Maybe she'd stop at Dexter's after the meeting was over and see how he was doing with his own love dilemma.

She looked at her watch as she jogged back down the stairs, and she knew with only a twenty-minute drive, she'd reach Harper and Co. on time. Her meeting was scheduled for twelve-thirty, but Ryker informed her that his father would be ending his meeting with one of his more important associates around noon, so she planned to arrive early. She hadn't heard from him since the night before, so she just assumed he would meet her there.

"Ready?" Mykie asked as she got back in the car.

"As I'll ever be. What's your plan?" Caspar asked.

"Being polite didn't seem to work last time, so intimidation seems like the way to go. If he can't take the Cantil's threat seriously, I'll have to make them take me seriously."

"Don't you think he got the hint when you stabbed him in the hand?"

"I don't think it's him that doesn't believe my bluff. He's too scared of someone to want to deal with the Cantil. Whether that's his wife or the Vultures, we'll soon find out."

She pulled into a similar parking spot as she did the last time she was there.
