Page 39 of Losing Control

"Another meeting," she responded, doing the same. "Depending on how it goes, I might come back here for dinner. I'll cook this time for just the two of us."

"How does that work? I mean, with the Cantil. Is it, like, some sort of secret mission you're given?" he asked.

"No, it's like working for any other job. I'm given a task by my boss, and I get it done as soon as I can. I've worked as a financial adviser in a lot of cases, so I'm the one who decides whether such a task or assignment is even worth it for our group to pursue."

"So, Chance relies on you a lot?"

Mykie nodded. "He's raised me, so he trusts my judgment as it is, but I'm pretty good at my job. He recommends me in a lot of circumstances based on my skill, not just because he wants me to. Since I've joined, our profits have gone up marginally."

"Wow," he said before he took a sip of his drink. "That's kind of cool, doing something so...normal when the job can be so dangerous."

She chuckled. "We're normal people, Corbus. Even Chance, in his position. We're just more likely to bring a gun somewhere than other people, that's all."

She checked her watch and sighed. "I thought I woke up earlier than this. I need to get home and get dressed in something more business-like before I head over to my meeting."

She pushed back her chair before she stood up. "Let the other boys know about the pancakes if you see them before you leave."

"Wait," Caspar said, moving out of his bedroom on his crutches. "I need to talk to you before you go."

Mykie looked between Corbus and Caspar. She hoped that she wasn't expected to ignore Caspar, even though they agreed that their time together was personal between the two of them.

"What's up, Caspar?" Mykie asked, meeting the boy halfway so he didn't have to travel any further.

"I want to come with you to the meeting."

Mykie frowned. "You sure? It's not going to be as…exciting as the last time you came with me. It's only a meeting to make up for the misunderstanding that happened during our last meeting."

"Why does he get to come with you?" Corbus asked snidely.

"You can't come, anyway. I just heard you say that you have a class today," Caspar snapped back. "Plus, I was there the last time she had a job. She won't get in trouble if I'm caught there."

Mykie looked at Corbus over her shoulder and gave him an apologetic smile. "I'm sorry, but he's right. For now, the only one that is allowed to be with me on an official job is Caspar for the time being. Otherwise, I'd be breaking one of the few rules of the Cantil: exposure of secrets, especially involving our businesses. If it makes you feel better, Caspar can come, but he can't know much more details than you can. He has to promise not to speak about the things he sees."

She looked at Caspar then. "Even if you see someone you know, you can't speak with them about what my job is there. Got it?"

Caspar nodded. "Absolutely. I'm not planning to break your trust."

"Well," Mykie said as she crossed her arms. "If that's settled, then we'll head out."

She waved Caspar on to pass her to get to her car. They had to walk behind where Corbus was cleaning up the table from his breakfast.

When she passed, Corbus reached out and pulled her into him.

"Even though you're going to your boring job to talk about money, I still want to give you a proper goodbye."

Before she could stop him, Corbus pressed a kiss to her lips. She had half the mind to resist the kiss, but the other half of her let it happen. At that moment, it was only her and Corbus in the room, and she couldn't help but focus on the taste of the syrup on his lips as he deepened the kiss, his hand wrapping around her back to pull her closer. The assertiveness from the kiss was unexpected, especially after how shy he was the night before, but she suspected that there was more to the move than he initially let on.

She finally pulled away with a few more light kisses to his lips. When she opened her eyes, the first person she saw was Caspar standing beside the doorway outside.

She opened her mouth to say something; to apologize, even. Instead, Caspar was the first to speak.

"If you kissed her any longer, you'd both be late. Let's go now," Caspar said, chuckling as he yanked the front open.

"Just make sure to bring her back!" Corbus called.

Mykie looked between the two boys before she cleared her throat. "Yes, um, right. We'll get going now."

She walked awkwardly to the front door where Caspar was waiting. He let her go first, but not without placing a kiss on her cheek.
