Page 29 of Losing Control

"Ren's totally falling for you. Duh," Ellenora answered, flipping her hair over her shoulder. "I know he can be a little slow with girls, so I was trying to save you the time dealing with him."

"Surely, he can't be that bad," Mykie argued.

"Oh, he is." She emphasized her words dramatically. “I'm sure Ryker could tell you all about it, though."

Ellenora sent a sly wink over her shoulder and Mykie froze.

"You don't know what you're talking about," Mykie said, her voice clipped.

"Don't worry about it," Ellenora stated, waving her hand as she walked over to another rack of dresses. "I knew it from the moment I saw Ryker looking at you. Then, he was so pushy about another meeting with you that there was no doubt that there was something more going on. More than just a smooch in the hallway, I mean."

She winked at Mykie asked and seemed to giggle once she saw the look of horror on Mykie's face. "Don't worry; I won't tell Renly about your little affairs. I didn't think you were that type of girl, though. Personally, I can see why you'd pick Ry over Ren, though."

"I didn't pick one over the other. It's not some sort of competition," Mykie argued.

Ellenora continued to go from one rack to another, picking up dresses that caught her eye. After the fifth or sixth rack, she looked towards her brother, who was leaning on the wall on the other side of the store with his phone in his hand. "If he knew what the two of you were up to, I think he'd disagree."

She wrapped her arm around Mykie's and pulled her with her towards the dressing rooms. She handed Mykie half of the dresses in her arms. "Go in one of the stalls and try those on. I want to see how they look on you, even if you don't buy them."

Mykie rolled her eyes but accepted the dresses. She'd entertain the younger woman if it meant she could avoid the man accompanying them.

She tried on all four dresses, but none of them looked flattering on her, much to Ellenora's distress.

"Try this one," she said, handing Mykie one of the red ones in her own pile. It was a little tight on Mykie when she walked out of the dressing room stall, but she had to admit that it didn't look half-bad on her.

She stood in front of the mirror, but had to blink hard after a bright, flashing light reflected off the mirror.

"Oh, Renny will love that one!" Ellenora squealed as she jumped up and down.

Mykie frowned.

"Do you dress yourself just to catch a certain guy's attention?" Mykie asked sarcastically. She watched for Ellenora's reaction in the mirror, and she was surprised when she saw the frown on the young redhead's face.

"Don't you? Mother picks out her outfits according to Papa's moods."

Mykie had to hold back the immediate response that came to her mind. She had to remind herself that they came from two different worlds. That was normal for Ellenora, but it made Mykie's blood boil.

"No, I dress in whatever I like that day. Everyone else can go screw themselves," Mykie murmured as she lifted her hair in one hand. She turned to the side, so she could see the way the dress looked in the back. While it looked nice in the front, the back seemed to ride up too much near her midback in a ruffle, and it looked odd. Considering that the dress was meant for someone with a more twig-like figure, it made sense.

She sighed as she walked back to the stall, unzipping it on the way. She came to the store for a black dress, and she wouldn't go home with anything else.

She got dressed again and came out with all the dresses back on the hangers.

"You didn't find anything you liked?" Ellenora frowned.

Mykie shook her head. "I just need a black dress, then I'll be on my way."

Ellenora shook her head and mumbled something under her breath as they made their way to the checkout counter. It seemed like Ellenora was going to buy all the dresses she found, which was over nine, including the ones in Renly's arms. Mykie couldn't help but clench her fists. She wished she had that sort of money to splurge on something useless like a pretty dress.

The store was much more populated than it was when they entered. Now that Mykie thought about it, most of the shoppers were probably eating lunch at the food court when they got started.

"I'll meet you guys outside the store once you're done," Mykie stated. She didn't hear if anyone called after her, as she was already halfway to the store entrance by the end of her sentence.

She leaned her shoulder on the wall beside the store's entrance. She was away from the incoming crowd, but she was also in a position where she'd be able to see the door when Ellenora and Renly came out.

She couldn't remember the last time she'd been to the mall like this. Usually, if she needed more clothes or needed anything new, she'd order it online. She detested the senseless walking around from store to store when one could sit at home and get the shopping done faster.

She was lost in thought about the pros and cons of shopping malls when someone covered her mouth with a hand and wrapped an arm around her waist, pulling her down the hallway beside the store that veered off the normal trek of shoppers. The only thing people came down there for was to take the elevator or reach the emergency exit. Her shoulder bag was immediately yanked off her body and she heard it hit the opposite wall.
