“No. Angry that his brother is showing interest in me.”

“Brother?” Jezebeth asked with a lifted eyebrow before she scoffed and shook her head with a smile. “Girl, only you would get yourself into so much trouble. How’d you manage to start dating a Cantil—one I’ve never seen before, I might add—that happens to be related to your assignment? Why isn’t he on the job?”

"You wouldn't know his real name." Mykie smirked. "His Cantil name is Ghost, though."

Mykie giggled to herself when Jezebeth almost dropped the glass in her hand.

“I’m in dangerous trouble, aren’t I?” Mykie asked.

“Mykie, youaredangerous trouble. I understand why you’re on the job instead of him now. Ghost usually doesn’t take ‘no’ for an answer, and I don’t expect him to be willing to kill his family for a job, no matter how loyal he may be.”

Mykie shrugged as she stood up and pushed herself away from the counter. “You’d be surprised.”

“You’ve got your hands full of men, that’s for sure. In more ways than one,” Jezebeth said moving her eyebrows up and down.

After Mykie circled behind the bar, she slapped Jezebeth on the shoulder in protest to her words, but even she was giggling as she descended into the Snake Pit. Those conversations were exactly what she was missing.

She met Ryker outside Chance’s office. "So, what business do we have to discuss tonight? And don’t think I’ve forgotten that you started shit when I explicitly told you not to."

“I’m sorry but I will take any opportunity to bother my brother,” Ryker said, smirking. "Anyway, I was waiting to tell you both until I knew for sure, but Chance is busy at the moment, so I will tell you that a new meeting was set up between you and Earl. I won’t be able to be there until the very end when the signatures are signed."

Mykie's eyes narrowed. "Are you hiding something?"

Ryker shook his head. "I suspect something, and I hope you'll be able to confirm it. I have to keep my distance from the situation for now. The meeting is Monday, and it will be right after a meeting with some of my father's usual associates.”

“His ’associates’ or Vultures?” Mykie asked skeptically. By now, it was confirmed that his father was working with their rivals. How didn’t Ryker know? Did he not recognize any of them when they had crossed paths?

“If it’s the Vultures, I don’t know what they would want with my parents, They do real estate.”

“The same we’d want with them. They are the ones that are selling buildings for future businesses. Who’s to say that it isn’t a signing clause with their company to have to sell half their business to the Vultures?”

“And Chance said to keep going with this deal, even with the Vultures involved?” Ryker asked.

“He said to put my foot on the gas and floor it, basically. I don’t know what’s been going on with him since Adam, but he’s been out of the office more times than he’s in, leaving me in charge.”

Ryker wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her in. “Andyou’ve been doing a wonderful job at it. I’m sure Chance is proud of everything you’re doing.”

“I hope you’re right. I just don’t understand why he needs me to keep pushing your parents. Why wouldn’t he want you to do it?”

"Chance doesn't know about my background. It's how our partnership works; I do the heavy work, and he doesn't ask questions that I haven't already provided the answers to. Besides, you're doing a much better job than I would have done in your situation."

Mykie sighed and laid her forehead on the front of his chest. “I’m glad that this hasn’t all been in vain.”

They were quiet for a moment as he just held her.

"Everything's all right with the girl now?" Ryker asked softly, breaking their silence.

She chuckled under her breath. "How many times do I have to tell you, her name is Jezebeth."

He shrugged. "I still won't remember it. I don’t pay attention to her unless it concerns you."

She rolled her eyes. "You don’t have to lie. Everyone notices her. She's so pretty, that it's hard not to."

"I've never lied to you," he said, brushing aside a piece of hair on her forehead that fell out of her ponytail. "You're effortlessly beautiful and I love you the way you are."

Mykie looked away, feeling her face heat up. The man knew had to make her feel special only with a few words.

"How about with the boys? Any problems?" he pressed.
