RAVEN

Mentioningthe amazing view wasn’t a figure of speech.

I’ve seen a lot of impressive places since I met him, but this is unique. The wide space, the open layout, the large terrace, the high ceilings mirroring the ones in the lobby, the furniture with cream upholstery and dark brown finish wood.

The modern art on the walls and the long white curtains tucked on either side of the glass wall.

An equally large kitchen opens to the left.

He walks in and moves with ease, retrieving glasses from the cupboard and a chilled bottle of wine from the fridge.

Maybe it’s not a celebration, but it certainly feels like one.

I walk onto the terrace, reach the handrail, and absorb the view that wraps around me like a postcard of tropical love.

The pink horizon, dark blue sky, and lit shore. Miami skyline. The streets beaming with life below.

He stops next to me and hands me a glass. I can tell he is proud of something, and it can’t be us.

We’ve failed miserably as human beings.

“You like it?” he asks.

“Yes. Yes, I do… What is this?” I say in a neutral tone, taking my drink from him.

He takes a sip, a secret smile creasing his lips.

“A place.”

It can’t just be any place.

“Is it yours?” I ask before swallowing the cool drink.

“It could be.”

He jokes, of course. It must be his. It is his.

“Is it the building project we were talking about yesterday morning?”

“No.”

He swallows and runs the tip of his tongue over his lips.

I dip my eyes and observe the process with contained fascination.

“That is over there,” he says, pointing to the farthest end of an island stretching across the water south from here. “We’ll visit that place tomorrow.”

A few seconds pass.

“So what is this?” I ask, curious now, turning my back to the view, leaning against the balustrade, and looking at him.

Facing the ocean, he trains his stare on the water, making it harder for me to see his eyes.

“This is the place we’ll all come back to tonight,” he murmurs pensively. “I wanted to make sure that you liked it,” he adds quietly.

Looking away, he conceals his expression, although the strange modulation in his voice gives him away.
