I mull over the answer.

“I think we should give them some space,” I say.

“Them?”

“Mm-hmm. He needs to sort things out with her. And she just, um… She needs some space.”

“You seem in no hurry to get to know her better,” he tosses at me ironically.

I smile.

“Thank you for being so concerned, but I know her well enough.”

“You don’t know what you’re missing.”

He slides his hands into his pockets.

“I can only imagine.”

It sounds like a joke.

“You know he did that on purpose,” he says.

“Did what on purpose?”

“Not going after her. He wanted to stop us from doing it. Once he didn’t do it, we couldn’t do it. And he also wanted to teach her a lesson.”

“Well… You’ve already told him I went out to look for her.”

His eyes flicker with amusement.

”Was I not supposed to?” he throws at me.

I laugh.

“Since when are you such a dick?” I throw at him.

“I learned from you,” he says, flashing a smile.

“Right. Seriously now. He needs to figure out what he wants to do with her.”

“I don’t think it’s about that. It’s more about what she wants to do.”

His eyes linger on me. He’s still very much suspicious of me. And he has every reason to be.

“She’ll screw us in the end. You know that,” I mutter.

“Yeah… I do. But I don’t want to lose you or him because of her.”

My smile fades.

“I don’t think it’s up to us, brother.”

I barely finish saying that when someone knocks on the door.

We look at each other before we both move our focus to the door.

“Come in,” I shout, and the door opens.
