She ponders.

“Things are not set in stone. If she breaks up for good with that guy, it doesn’t mean she loses her job or can’t teach you what she knows.”

“Right…”

“You don’t sound too convinced.”

“No. I mean, yes. You’re right. I worry about nothing. We’ll see how things go.”

Another pause ensues.

“You’re a bit jumpy,” she comments.

“I’m not. Well, maybe a little.”

“You’re going to make more money at this new job, and you’re already more stressed out than at your old job, where you made little money.”

“That’s me… A worrywart.”

I laugh, still tense.

She makes a good point. I don’t know what makes me so nervous. Shauna’s story? Hearing Robert Walker’s name? Or my meetup with the three men tonight? And Kai in particular?

Another call pops up on my screen.

“Hey. Listen, listen….” I say, rushed. “I have to take this. I’ll call you in the morning. All right?”

“Yes. Sure. Bye,” she singsongs while I smile.

“Isla??” I say, pushing to my feet and walking to the closet.

“Hey. What’s up? How are things with you?” she shoots at me back to back, her voice engulfed in a noisy background.

“Good,” I say louder. “Where are you?”

“Out. You?”

“I’m getting ready to go out for dinner.”

“Where?”

“I don’t know yet.”

“Is it work again?”

I smile.

“Sort of.”

“You made peace with your hunks?”

“They aren’t my hunks. And we weren’t at war.”

“Says the runaway… Anyway, I hope things worked out between that Cuban hottie and you. Man, that guy is fine. I would’ve done nasty things to him if he weren’t so obsessed with you.”

“He was obsessed with me?” I joke.

“Seriously? Are you asking me that? A fire blazed in his eyes last night at Em’s house. And I bet his pants were on fire too. You should’ve seen him talking about you.”
