Page 69 of When We Feel

He’s naked underneath. No swimming trunks. I refrain from commenting.

The pool it is.

He glances around when he notices my shopping bags––the ones carrying the sunglasses and the scarf.

Secretly, I tuck my necklace inside my neckline.

Just in time, as he moves his inquiring gaze to me.

“Where were you?” he asks.

“Shopping,” I say in the most natural voice in the world, hoping he won’t make the connection between Alejandro and my shopping bags.

He’s seen me shopping in New York. It’s not like I don’t have a credit card, but anyone with the elementary math skills of a ten-year-old can figure out that I don’t have the means to shop for designer clothing.

He doesn’t seem to notice, his smile fading as his eyes move over my dress.

Suddenly we’re wrapped in silence.

“I’m sorry,” he says.

My heart races.

He raises his eyes, leans back against the wall table, and crosses his arms over his chest.

“What are you sorry for?”

“Last night.”

A bittersweet smile tugs at his lips. I feel like sitting. And I move closer to the bed before lowering myself to the edge.

I say nothing.

“I was a dick,” he continues. “I didn’t want to be, but I was. It’s not like me. Well… This is kind of new to me.”

I wish I could ask… What exactly is new? Me, Raven? This type of agreement?

He doesn’t elaborate, so I squash my curiosity.

“What do you want me to say?” I murmur.

“Nothing.”

“I understand…”

He laughs dismissively.

“No, you don’t. You shouldn’t. They blame me for what happened last night. You going out and partying with other people.”

“Who’s they?”

“Kai, mostly… Both of them think the same thing.”

“It wasn’t only because of you,” I clarify. “It was just strange. Weird.”

“Yeah… Yeah. I know. I talked to Kai about that.”

I tense up.
