“Is this about her?” I ask, my hands clutching my hips.

He lifts his eyes to me.

“What makes you say that?’

His question is meant to be a joke, but seriousness threads through his tone.

“I know you. What’s wrong?”

“Nothing’s wrong.”

I study his face.

He flashes a smile… eventually.

“I wanted to spend the day with her,” he says.

A lump forms in my throat.

“What stopped you?” I ask, staring at him, poker-faced.

His green-blue eyes flicker with emotion. I can’t tell if it’s lust or regret.

“I didn’t want it to mean something.”

“Would it have meant something?”

“No.”

His response comes quickly and seems sincere, although I’m not so sure. We wouldn’t have this conversation if it were.

“Why then?”

“I didn’t think it was a good idea. Not after she’d spent the night out. I didn’t think it was a good idea Kai had spent time with her.”

I relax a little.

“Kai has his own business with her.”

“I have no doubt. It’s just that it looked kind of desperate.”

No fucking way. I look at him with newfound admiration. I’ll be damn. Francisco might win this game in the end.

Who knew the most rational amongst us is possibly the most impulsive man I’ve ever met?

“Uh-huh,” I grump. “Go on…” I say, although I add something else before he does. “You know she was out alone last night because of you… Mostly. Right?”

“Yeah… Maybe,” he says, unfazed. “She was out because she was out.”

I ponder.

“Why do you care so much if it looks desperate? Who cares, after all?”

“I do.”

I say nothing.

“I wanted to be with her last night. And I thought I’d be with her again today. But it wasn’t possible after what happened.”
