RAVEN

Of course,it’s not only about shopping for new sunglasses.

He must know or suspect that Francisco has bought me gifts. And I’m not going to get into an argument with him and refuse the sunglasses.

Shopping with him is fun. Alejandro makes it fun.

He’s in a good mood, beaming with energy, and he’s relaxed at the same time.

And miraculously, my body gets in sync with his.

How? I have no idea.

I still don’t feel sleepy in the slightest, and I’m as tense as hours ago, which scares me, but I’m hoping to reach a point where my brain shuts down, my thoughts calm down, and I feel blissfully tired.

We peruse the merchandise before I end up with a fancy pair of sunglasses and a scarf that costs more than my car.

He doesn’t stop there, walking me to a jewelry stand.

The woman gives us a discreet once-over before offering her help.

“What are we doing here?” I ask him under my breath while he moves his gaze over a couple of necklaces.

“I want you to have something from me,” he murmurs, looking down, weighing the exquisite pieces with expert eyes.

“Something you don’t need a special occasion to wear.”

Is he hinting at Francisco’s gifts?

“Something you can wear all the time…” he continues before making his selection.

The woman retrieves three necklaces from the display case. I almost faint when I glimpse the prices.

He narrows his selection down to one. A beautiful, delicate platinum necklace with a teardrop-shaped diamond pendant. The diamond sparkles blue.

He picks it up and studies it for a second.

“This is it,’ he says before nudging me to turn around.

I put my bag down and hold my hair up while he fastens the necklace around my neck.

The pendant slides down before settling at the top of my chest, just above the space between my breasts.

It’s, um… Stunning. Simple. Its design is sexy and elegant. My eyes are pinned on the mirror in front of me as my hair slides back in place, and he moves his focus away from me, paying for the purchase.

Their voices fade in the background, my surroundings withering away as I take in the woman in front of me.

This necklace costs more than my grandma’s house. I don’t see myself pawning it anytime soon to pay for a renovation or anything like that, but I probably could.

It won’t happen, though. I know what this necklace means.

It’s not only an expensive gift or him keeping up with Francisco.

He wants me to have something from him to remember him by when all this is over, and he no longer has access to my life.

It’s a bittersweet feeling to be with someone, knowing they won’t be with you for long.
