He laughs.

“What are we talking about here? Fucking?”

I chuckle.

Biting my lip, I look out the window. He turns off the AC and lowers the windows.

“I told you,” he says.

“How did you know?’ I ask in a monotone voice, studying the shore.

He doesn’t answer. I move my eyes to him.

He gestures, his elbow propped on the door, the wind blowing his hair.

He looks so hot. Or maybe I’m a little biased right now. Didn’t finish with Kai. Couldn’t get myself off. All that shitty business with my phone.

“I know men. I know Kai…” he says before going silent, no longer smiling.

“You didn’t want to be in the hotel because he was in the room with me,” I say, studying his profile.

It’s a hunch.

His admission takes me by surprise.

“Yeah… Something like that. I was in a shitty mood. And I knew he was after you. I didn’t want to be around him. Or you.”

“I could tell. You were dark when you left the hotel. Did you cross him?”

He glances at me, but I can’t see his eyes, so there are no clues for me there.

“By spending the night with me and lying to him? And them…? Did you cross him?”

He clicks his tongue.

“No. It was part of the deal.”

He shifts his eyes back to the road while I ponder.

“Why did he put that clause in the contract if he knew he’d get mad at me?” I murmur, mostly to myself. “Well, he wanted me to believe it was because I’d left the dinner party. I knew it was more than that.”

He thinks about it for a moment. Or maybe he’s not sure, again, if he wants to share that information with me.

“He didn’t know how things would unfold. But it wasn’t only that… He knows people. He knew we’d do it, anyway. He’d done it himself, so he was proactive. By putting it into the contract, he has accomplished two things. One, he’s given us the opportunity to fuck it up.”

I laugh.

He flashes a grin.

“It’s true,” he says.

“I know. That’s why I’m laughing. Although it’s not funny.”

“Well… Kai is a tough player. We all knew that. Maybe you didn’t, but I’m sure you know that by now. He’s like a chess player thinking ten moves ahead. Because of that, I knew things would be interesting.”

He gives me a side-eye glance.

“And fun,” he adds. “But that clause is in there exactly for these two things to happen. To tempt us to risk it all and maybe ruin our chances to stay in the game.”
