“What about Raika’s father?” Shane asked. “Do you know who he is?”

My eyes widened.

“I …” Franc pressed his lips tight. “I guess I could tell you. His na—” His words broke as the swirl of shadow returned from the ground.

Shane’s eyes rounded and he took a step toward the circle. “Wait, not yet.”

“I don’t—” Franc tried talking, but his words were fading along with him. “Take care, son.”

The shadows enveloped him.

Shane darted toward the circle. I grabbed his arm and pulled him back. “Shane, no!”

He jerked out of my grip, shaking my hands away, but he didn’t advance. I stepped back, shocked by his sharp movements. What was I expecting? He probably hated me now too.

The shadow tornado disappeared.

The flames atop the pillars snuffed out.

Franc was gone.

Shane and I stood still for a moment, staring at the empty spot where Franc had been a second ago.

Shane put his hand on his waist and let out a long breath.

“Shane,” I started, my voice low.

“Don’tShaneme. I …” He turned to me, his eyes enraged. “What hurts the most isn’t the fact that you are half-demon. That’s pretty shocking, but right now, what hurts the most is that you lied to me.”

“I didn’t lie,” I said quickly. “Not intentionally. I didn’t know—”

“But you just admitted you used your magic before. You knew about your powers.”

“At first, I thought it was a fluke! That something else must have happened. Later … I was afraid of myself. I thought—I hoped—that if I ignored it, it would go away. I didn’t want this.”

“It doesn’t matter. We talked about this. We agreed, no more secrets! But you hid something big from me.”

“It wasn’t my intention. I didn’t know what was going on, and until a few minutes ago, I had no idea about my heritage. What do you thinkI’mfeeling after finding out my father is a damn demon?”

Shane shook his head. “You should have told me, whatever it was, even if you had no idea what was going on.”

“I didn’t want you looking at me like you are now,” I yelled, my voice breaking. The pain and distrust in his gaze freaking hurt.

He blinked, averted his gaze. “I’m done here.”

Shane turned and walked to the elevator. He pressed the button and the doors opened. Without looking at me, Shane stepped inside. The doors closed.

He left.

And this time, he had left me of his own accord.

I stayed in that room, jumping each time lightning struck, for a few more minutes. I wasn’t ready to go upstairs and face Shane, or anyone else.

By the moon, what I had done? I knew I should have told him about this a long time ago, but I felt so scared of my magic, so ashamed … I was afraid he would too.

And now he did.
