“What?” I ask, my eyes widening.

“You heard me. I’m going places, baby.”

I grab him in a hug. I can’t believe it. He’s getting everything he wanted. We both are.

“That’s amazing!” I say. “But we knew you were going to do it.”

He nods. “Yeah, well, my grades weren’t that great a while ago so…” He winks at me, and I blush.

Our feud nearly screwed up both our futures, but we’re okay now, more than okay.

“Are you coming to the game tomorrow?” Stone asks Kat. He doesn’t have to ask me because I’m always there.

“Sure,” she says. “Is Chaz playing?”

I smirk at her. She’s been crushing on Stone’s best friend, and I want them to get together. It will be the perfect double date, two best friends dating two best friends. Besides, Chaz is a great guy. Kat deserves that.

“He is,” Stone says. “In fact, why don’t we find him, and we’ll all hang out together?”

I nod, and Kat looks shy. Stone whistles loudly, the sound piercing above the music. Another whistle answers, and we walk through the crowds to where Chaz is sitting on a counter, drinking from a cup similar to ours.

“Hey,” he says, hopping off when he sees us. He and Stone clap hands as they shake and bro hug. He turns to Kat, and she blushes when he so much as looks at her.

“Do you need a refill?” he asks.

Kat nods, and Chaz swaps their cups so that she has more.

I glance at Stone, who grins.

He pulls me to the side when they start talking.

“What are you doing this summer?” he asks.

“I don’t have any plans yet.”

“Do you want to come home with me?”

I blink at him. “Stone, that means I’ll—”

“Meet my parents. Yeah.”

I swallow hard. “What if they don’t like me?”

“They’ll love you. I do, so it will be simple.”

I grin. “I love you too.”

“And honestly, if they don’t love you? Fuck ‘em.”

I laugh. “Okay. Let’s do it.”

He grabs me and kisses me.

Sometimes, when I wake up in the middle of the night, I’m still confused about where I am. I still have a fear at the pit of the stomach that my dad is going to appear from the shadows and beat the living shit out of me. There are days that I’m weary, days that I feel like I should look over my shoulder again and again.

But no one is after me. No one is out to get me, and I’m not doing anything wrong.

When the nightmares start to return, I stop and take a deep breath. I remember where I am. I rememberwhoI am and where I’m headed.
