“That was just made up by someone to calm down a Bridezilla,” I grumbled. Bree chuckled, slinging her arm around my shoulder.

“It will be perfect. And then, we will officially be sisters.”

“You’re already my sister,” I murmured, turning to look at my best friend.

“Aw don’t, you’re gonna make me cry.” She pulled me in for a hug. “Now let’s go and find the others.”

Wiping her tears away with the back of her hand, she linked arms with me and we headed back to the house.

A few hours later, we were all sitting around Ella and Logan’s dining table.

Logan sat at the head with Ella on his left. Their best friends and business partners, Lex and Vanessa who’d been invited to the wedding sat on his other side, followed by Bree and Enzo, and then Aidan and myself as we moved around the table.

Lex and Vanessa owned a security company with Logan and Ella. I’d met them once before when they’d come to New York to help us review security following the takeover of Italian territory, and since they were so close to our hosts, I thought it only polite to invite them.

“So, how’s business?” Aidan directed at Logan. He kept glancing awkwardly at Lex, and I wasn’t sure why. Was he just uncomfortable having an almost stranger here?

“Can’t complain.” Logan grinned, leaning back in his chair and picking up his Bourbon. There was a flash of something in his eyes, and a shudder ran up my back.

I’d heard from Brianna that Logan had been a hitman, that was why he had been in prison. He specifically murdered mobsters. He hated anything to do with the seedy underbelly that ran most of this country’s cities, which was why I’d been so surprised how close he was to Enzo and Bree.

Perhaps that was why Aidan felt so uneasy.

He wasn’t like that anymore, apparently, but looking at him still made me feel a bit unsettled.

“Are you looking forward to the wedding?” Ella leaned in to ask. “I know it’s been a long time coming.”

I chuckled nervously. “I’m still sort of waiting for the other shoe to drop. I don’t think I’m going to believe it’s actually happening until I’ve got the ring on my finger.”

“Understandable.” She smiled wide, and it automatically put me at ease. From what I knew of Ella, she was sweet and kind… she wouldn’t be with Logan if he was a danger to her brother, and by extension, us. “I hear you’ve got some family coming in tomorrow?” She picked up her wine and took a sip.

“Some cousins, yes. I’ve only recently connected with them. My parents were sort of outcasts in the family.”

“I was sorry to hear what happened to your parents.” She reached out and squeezed my hand. “My mother also died when I was young.” She gave me a sympathetic look.

“Thanks, I appreciate that.”

“What are you two blathering about over there?” Enzo interrupted causing both of our glances to shoot towards him.

“Girl stuff.” She poked her tongue out at him and I smiled. Having been without a family for so long, it was kind of weird to be sitting down at a big table like this, but it was nice to be surrounded by people for once.

Enzo fell back into conversation with the guys, and Bree picked up conversation with Ella and Vanessa, leaving me sipping my wine and taking it all in.

“We’ve had reports he’s back in the country,” I suddenly overheard from across the table. My gaze snapped to Lex curiously.

Who?

“Fuck,” Logan hissed, his hand reaching for Ella’s.

“We’re not sure where yet, but this could be our shot,” Vanessa said.

I looked down guiltily. I was pretty sure I wasn’t meant to be hearing this.

Perhaps it was one of their clients.

The rest of the dinner passed smoothly, everyone laughed and enjoyed themselves, and by the time we all headed up to bed, I was exhausted.
