I hid my smug smile behind a cough.

Why did I like that I had that power over her? It was sick. Pathetic. Insanity.

Bree eyed me suspiciously, rising from the steps and patting nonexistent dust from her jeans. “She’s not like the girls you date, Aidan. She feels. I know you like to tease her but I’m warning you. Don’t fuck with her.”

I froze for a moment. Did Bree suspect my feelings?

I scoffed. “She’s my little sister’s best friend… don’t worry, I have no intention of fucking with her, or anything else using that word.” I dropped the cigarette and stubbed it out with the toe of my boot, turning back to my bike.

And that was true. As much as I would have given my left nut for one night with Cait Malley, she was too close. In fact, some could say she was almost a sister to me… I couldn’t go there. Wouldn’t. She was off limits.

I had a line of girls halfway round the block who wanted to fill the gap in my bed… Cait and I…

I needed to get out of here before anything else was said.

“Aidan.” My father’s voice snapped from the doorway. I flinched as it whipped across my eardrums, but I kept my eyes on my bike.

“Where are you going now?”

Shit.

“Nowhere, Da,” I sighed, turning to face Cullen O’Callaghan. He wore a look of disappointment on his face, but that wasn’t new.

“I want you at the next meeting, Aidan, and that’s not a request.”

I’d gotten out of the last one by telling him I needed to help Brianna. He’d do anything for his little princess, so she’d become a very convenient excuse. It was the only reason I tolerated standing around for hours while she sketched with a half-chewed pencil stuffed behind her ear. And of course because I got to torment Cait.

“Okay, Da,” I agreed, not really meaning it, but it was pointless to argue with him, especially in front of Bree. She’d just use it as ammunition against me. In fact, she now stood, hip cocked, with an arrogant smile on her lips.

I was convinced that God invented little sisters purely to test your ability to stay sane.

“Dinner is ready,” he muttered gruffly, seeming surprised that I hadn’t fought him on it.

Cullen turned on his heel and disappeared into the house, while Bree just stood there, smug glee sparkling in green eyes that matched mine almost perfectly.

“Ha! You’re in trouble,” she sang haughtily, mock punching me in the arm.

“Not as much trouble as you’ll be in when I tell them about Kellan Connor.” I waggled my eyebrows at her, and her jaw dropped, a vivid blush staining her cheeks.

“How do you know about that?” she asked, outraged.

Brianna wasn’t supposed to date. She was supposed to be the perfect little Catholic girl, and our father would probably have a coronary if he knew she’d been kissing a non-religious teenage fuckwit at school.

“I have my ways.” I tapped my forehead, and then grabbed her shoulders, pushing her towards the door.

She whirled in my arms, genuine tears in her eyes. “You can’t tell them, Aidan. You can’t.”

I froze, watching the distress on her face.

Shit.I hadn’t meant to actually upset her.

I pulled her into a hug, kissing her on the head. “Don’t worry, your secret is safe with me,” I assured her, holding her at arm’s length so I could look her in the eyes and she would see I was sincere.

“Thanks,” she said in a wobbly voice, sniffing back her tears.

“But you could pick someone a bit better than him. Someone at least worth getting into trouble over.” I flashed her a teasing grin, but I was deadly serious. Kellan was a different breed of waste of space. A sniveling rat of a boy who’d almost pissed himself when I’d cornered him and warned him away from her. I didn’t know what Bree saw in him.

“I was just… curious.” She shrugged, and for the first time, I realized my little sister was growing up. In a few months, I’d be heading off to college (with or without my father’s permission) and I wouldn’t be around to kick the asses of shitbags like Kellan Connor.
