"Yeah, but for how long after that? Until your boss cuts your throat? Where is that going to get you? Just dead, that's where."

He shrugged. "Dead, but vindicated."

"Right, then." I couldn't even claim it was the first time I talked to a man so casually about my own potential rape. If it wasn't for Jake, that would have been my fate years ago.

I was acutely aware he wasn't here right now.

"So, is the plane going to crash?" I looked between the seats in front of me, but the cockpit door was closed.

"I don't know," he admitted. "If I'm going to die anyway…"

I actually laughed. "Dude, if you can do it before we hit the water, then I'm not your problem."

He smirked.

Before he could speak, the plane shuddered.

"This wasn't how I imagined dying." I sighed. "What's your name?"

He glanced over at me. "Huh?"

"If we're going to die together, I figured I should know your name." I winced when the plane shuddered again. "Is it Eric?"

"What? No. It's Toby. Tobias." He looked back over his shoulder at something.

"What is it?" I asked. "Dragon? Phoenix? Pterodactyl?"

"I dunno, I can't see," he said. His head snapped back toward me. "Did you do something?"

The question took me by surprise, but then I laughed. "Yes, absolutely. I'm sitting inside the plane, while trying to make it crash so I die too."

Thankfully he had at least a basic understanding of sarcasm.

"If you're going to die, you'll want to take as many of us with you as you can," he said.

I smiled. "Well, yes. A queen needs servants in the afterlife." I rolled my eyes. "Whatever is going on, it's not me. Your boss probably skimped on the cost of maintenance. Or he has other enemies, apart from me. I mean, not everyone looks favourably on the days of Dagen rule over the state."

After a moment, I added, "Tobias, are you in on an assassination attempt? I'd think better of you if you were."

"Fuck off," he snarled. "I'm loyal. The only person I'd assassinate is you."

"That's very touching." I looked back through the plane. I couldn't see Hutton, but I met Ben's eyes. Electricity zapped between us. If I was going to die, I'd rather be in his arms than here with Toby.

I wanted to get up and stagger through the plane to him. I would find Hutton, and the three white wolves could huddle together and wait it out.

But if we didn't crash, we would have shown all our cards.Iwould have. Revealed that I had feelings for Ben, and that Hutton sort of worked for me. I couldn't rule out the possibility that this was some kind of twisted trick.

When the fuck did I get so cynical? Oh yeah, when I came home from school to a home decorated with my parent's blood.

Wonderful. I would die alone because I was suspicious of everyone's motives. Yeah, well, it kept me alive for this long.

"So, Toby Tobias. Does this plane have parachutes? No? Oxygen masks? Airbags?"

"Barfbags." He nodded to the pocket in the seat in front of him.

"For the record, Dagen being a tightass is going to kill us all." The plane shuddered harder this time. It dropped for a good two seconds. My stomach flew up into my throat.

"Too late for a fuck?" Toby asked. He almost smiled. Almost.
