"Did you think I’d be fooled?" Dagen asked. "By a white wolf amongst my men?"

I turned my indifference on him. "He's a traitor to our kind. He might as well be a black wolf. Those guys Gus corrupted are beyond saving." Some didn’t take it well when I took back my territory. They got used to being able to kill indiscriminately. One or two died defending black wolves. A few more were disposed of quietly. No one took pleasure in that. It wasn’t too surprising Jake didn’t trust Hutton. The past was murky at best.

"Then you won't miss him when he's dead," Dagen said lightly.

I matched his tone. "I guess not."

To Hutton's credit, his expression didn't change. I had no idea if he was pissed off, or understood I was pretending I didn't care for his sake. I got nothing from him at all. A total closed book. He could have taken lessons in being carved ice from me.

"As for your bodyguard," Dagen went on, "you're going to miss him a little bit more. Or his cock anyway. Don't worry, mine will console you. Now you can’t get pregnant, you’ll be a lot more fun."

Yeah, I figured that was the point of the surgery. Not just that I couldn’t breed, but that he couldn’t breed with me. That was a small blessing, I supposed. Carrying his whelp would be a whole other nightmare.

"No thank you," I said, my voice frozen steel. I somehow managed to keep myself from trembling. I forced the flashbacks into the rear of my brain. "I don't want your cock, and I don't want to play games. This bullshit has gone on long enough. You think you're going to break me, but you won't." He’d have to kill me first.

Dagen leaned in closer. "That's what they all say. Right before they break." He reached up and pinched my nipple through the fabric of my bra. Just when I thought he might let it go, he twisted it so hard I let out a tiny gasp of pain. "I've barely started."

In the corner of my eye, I saw Ben take a step towards us before a couple of Dagen's men grabbed him. I felt his anger. How much he wanted to rip Dagen to pieces.

I shook my head. He should be looking for a chance to get out of here. Get away. Run.

He sent back thoughts; he didn't want to leave without me.

If you get a chance, you have to go, that's an order. I couldn't tell him in words, but those were the feelings I sent to him. He wanted to resist, I felt that through the bond too, but I was firm.

Dagen let go of my nipple and pushed me away. "I know you want me, but you'll have to wait. Our game comes first."

I staggered back but managed to stay on my feet. It was getting harder and harder to keep my composure. More difficult still when some of Dagen's men started to undress. For a moment, I thought I was the toy in this game.

Then they shifted and cold dread formed in my stomach.

"I see you understand," Dagen said smoothly. "It's been a while since we've had a good old-fashioned hunt. I've been looking forward to it. It's entertaining and a good way to get rid of two white wolves. The rules are simple. Hutton and the bodyguard will get a minute head start. In fact, I'm feeling generous. Make it two minutes. Then the black wolves will give chase. Whoever catches and kills them, wins. In fact," he smiled as though he was a game show host or something, "whoever kills them, can fuck the bitch after I do. With her lovers' blood all over them."

I wanted to call him a sick fuck, but it was something I probably would have thought up myself. Blood and fucking are a perfect combination. Blood and rape, however, were a different story.

Two henchholes held Ben, while the witch crossed the lawn and removed his collar with a snap.

I both saw and felt what he was thinking.

He could shift and go after Dagen.

You have your orders. Shift and get the fuck out of here.My expression was firm. If he stuck around, they would kill him. I was certain of that. This might be his only chance. Hehadto take it. Even if I never saw him again, I needed him to be safe. If he died, if either of them did…I might break after all.

Ben’s expression was defiant. He hesitated, but I was insistent. He nodded reluctantly, then glanced at Hutton. Something passed between them. Something silent, but almost palpable.

I didn't know what it meant, but the two men had come to some kind of understanding.

Dagen glanced at his watch. "Your two minutes starts… Now."

Ben and Hutton shifted simultaneously, shredding their clothes in the process. They bounded off towards the trees, headed in opposite directions. Two white, magnificent wolves.

Barely two minutes later, Dagen nodded towards his wolves. With barely a sound, they started off after Hutton and Ben. Half one way, half the other.

I thought about making a run for it, but several goons remained arrayed around me. Far enough to give me some space, but close enough to react if I moved. Dagen was excited enough without me provoking him further.

Another man leaned against the side of the shed, a cigarette hanging from the corner of his lips. Not a goon, if his outfit was anything to go by.

He pushed himself off the wall and walked toward me.
