From the expression on Toby's face, I was right.

"He won't hear it from me," I said. "Promise." I made no guarantees about the people around us having overheard. That was his problem. I also wouldn't guarantee I wouldn't tell someone and have them tell Dagen. That would depend on how he treated me from now on. If he tried anything, I would make absolutely certain Dagen knew about it. I knew he knew that too.

Yes, I could also be petty.

"I presume we're not far from our destination." I peered out the window.

Toby grunted. He was back in full grumpy goon mode. I sensed I wouldn't get anything else out of him. That was fine. I didn't want to be his friend, and I didn't want to risk lowering my guard. He was the enemy. As if I could forget for a moment.

The alarm pinged as we passed low over a town on the north coast. Onyx Head, unless I missed my guess. Where else would black wolves hang out? It was one of those sleepy towns that got trendy and expensive with the injection of cash from people like Dagen. It was probably full of movie stars and drugs or some shit. Cooper would probably love it. Jake would tell them all to get fucked and go surfing. He was a pretty good surfer when he got the chance to get out in the water.

As for me, my skin burned just thinking about going out in the sun.

The alarm was still pinging as we headed towards a small runway. Not surprisingly, a fire truck waited beside it. Presumably that was just a precaution. They didn't actually think we were going to burst into flames on landing. Right?

The wheels hit the runway with barely a bounce, but we flew along so fast I thought we would take off at the other end. Of course, we didn't. The plane slowed and turned to taxi back along the runway and towards the small airport.

"Well, we survived that in one piece," I remarked under my breath. Was that a good thing though, or a terrible thing?

The plane came to a stop and the goons hurried to get the door open and the steps out. Dagen emerged from the cockpit looking slightly pale. He was the first one off the aircraft.

Like a rat deserting a sinking ship.

Toby unbuckled his seatbelt and nodded for me to do the same.

I was tempted to thank him sarcastically, but I decided not to screw with our uneasy peace. Instead, I unclicked and even stood without being asked, or dragged to my feet. That didn't stop Toby from grabbing my arm and pushing me to, and then out, the door.

I managed to look dignified when I stepped out in the breeze of what was now mid-morning.

"I hope you fire whoever is supposed to maintain that for you." I jerked my head back toward the plane and gave Asshole an insincere smile.

"I'll have them killed," he growled.

I couldn't even call him excessive, it's exactly what I would do. Anyone who risked my life like that forfeited theirs. Especially if they cut corners.

"Get the bitch to the car," he snapped. His mood was worse than before. Bad enough to put me on edge.

He watched me through narrowed eyes, clearly expecting me to remind him not to call me that.

I wasn't scared of him, but I wasn't stupid. I could tell he was hoping I'd give him an excuse to break my other cheekbone. Or just kill me outright.

"Come on." Toby shoved me over to one of the waiting cars. Not a black SUV, to my surprise. Rather, it was an ordinary, black sedan.

No four wheel driving for us today. Shame, that might have been fun.

Toby opened the door and let me climb in without help.

Before he could follow me inside, Dagen snapped, "Not you. I can see on your face she got to you already." He nodded to another of his men. "Terminate him. You two, stay close to her."

Toby looked shocked, but they dragged him away before I could react, or respond.

Dagen was more astute than I gave him credit for. And areallyshitty boss.

I sat back and watched out the tinted windows while the henchmen took Ben to another car.

Hutton followed the goons who were dragging a white faced Toby to yet another car. I wasn't sure if I should curse his name or not. I didn't want Toby dead because of me, but he was still one of Dagen's men, more or less. If Hutton exposed himself in some attempt to save Toby…

I ducked my head. There was nothing I could do or say that would change anything now. For all I knew, Hutton would be the one to kill him. I hated not being certain which side the man was on. Just because he made it clear he wanted to fuck me didn't mean he wasn't ready to strangle me.
