I got out of the cell and soon, I was given my possessions and let out. Once I had my cell phone, I called Pedro, who told me Marinka had vanished and he had no idea where she was.

After hours in that holding cell, I was finally able to organize my thoughts. Marinka must have done this for a reason. She wanted me to see her with that guy. I had a feeling it was just a distraction, so she could leave the party without me—but why?

“You all right?” Milo asked, walking to me when I left the station.

“Did you find her?” I asked.

“No, Lilly is still in Penelope’s apartment and apparently, Marinka was there earlier on. Penelope has no idea where she’s gone because Marinka refused to say anything. She just told her she needed to leave,” Milo explained as we started walking towards the car. “Penelope was pretty distressed about the whole thing. Seems Marinka was ready to take Lilly and run. She told her that you cheated on her with Sofia when she was in the coma and then later, a few days ago when you took her shopping for funeral clothes.

“Apparently, she saw some pictures of you two. Then, Penelope assured her that wasn’t true, and that was when Marinka left.”

We got into the car, trying to think straight while Pedro sped through the dark streets of Chicago. I had no idea where we were going, but it was imperative that I found my wife asap.

“I can’t believe Penelope let her leave. We have to find a way to track her down,” I said.

Now this whole thing made sense. Marinka must have been cornered by Sofia at the party and that bitch must have showed her the pictures then. Sofia was fucking smart, but Marinka wouldn’t believe her unless she had concrete evidence. There must have been a camera in that room where I met with her that night before Vlad’s funeral. She must have had enough proof if she pushed Marinka to do what she did at that party.

“Yeah, she was gone before Penelope could stop her. She didn’t tell her where she was going,” Milo explained. “And before you ask, we looked for her everywhere. She hasn’t been home or at the penthouse and our people are searching other properties.”

I told Pedro to take me home. I needed to get cleaned up before I started making some phone calls. I was covered in dried blood and my shirt was torn.

I just had to pray Marinka was safe. She must be scared I’d be too angry with her and want to kick her out. I got home and took a long shower. Pedro told me the guy I’d attacked at the party was going to live, but he was badly beaten up. I was fucking lucky that he was still alive.

I was stupid that I reacted so impulsively. My temper got the better of me and now, Marinka was nowhere to be seen. I was fucking worried. I didn’t believe she slept with that guy. It was all staged, so she could run away from me.

After I put on clean clothes, I had something to eat. I checked my emails and tracked all the vehicles my men used. Her father had several properties but Milo told me he’d already sent his men everywhere.

At this point, both of my brothers were driving around the city, going to the clubs and checking the bus stops and train stations. I didn’t think about the hospital. Well, I truly couldn’t bear to think that she could have been hurt.

“You have to call the bitch, sir. She could know something,” Pedro told me after I made myself a coffee.

The party had been a disaster. So much for my gut feeling. The senator would bury me unless I gave him what he wanted. This was going to end really badly for me, whichever way I looked at it. I dragged my hand through my hair and let out a sharp exhale.

“I don’t think I can speak to her after everything she’s done. I want to kill her with my bare hands,” I growled. And now, to add insult to injury, I could go to prison for a very long time because I nearly beat an innocent guy to death.

That wasn’t even the whole of it. We still hadn’t pinned down who was responsible for burning down the clubs, and who among my employees had been talking to my enemies—Sofia in particular. My guess was, she was behind it all.

We had a mole to rat out, but until my wife was safe, there was no time to focus on this.

“Something happened. Marinka wouldn’t just vanish,” he said, and I fucking hated to agree with him. He was right. Marinka was emotional and angry and that combination was always explosive.

I was going to lose my mind with worry if I didn’t call Sofia. My wife hated me because I’d never told her the truth about me and that bitch. I should have been honest from the very beginning, upfront about the kidnapping and the fact I’d treated her badly when she first came to live with me.

I started scrolling through the contacts in my phone. This woman was the bane of my existence and she’d fucked with my family.

I stared at the phone number for a little while before I dialed it. I went for a video call because I needed to see her face when she was telling me that she didn’t know where Marinka was. I would recognise her lies straight away. Her phone rang and rang for a little while longer than I expected. Then, her face showed on the screen.

“Sebastian, how nice to hear from you. Funny, I was just about to call you, darling,” she said, touching her hair and giving me a bright smile.

“I know what you have done, Sofia,” I snapped and then she got up and started walking. She was in a large open space that looked like a warehouse. She laughed loudly, and then someone else came into view. My heart skipped a beat, then raced triple time.

Fuck, she had Marinka. My wife was still wearing the same dress from the party, but now she was tied up to a chair, unconscious.

“Oh look, Sebastian, your beautiful wife is here. I told you I always get what I want. You didn’t listen, so I have to do what’s necessary and that saddens me,” she sang, brushing Marinka’s hair.

I was overcome by bloodlust again, but I forced myself to speak.

“I swear to God, if you hurt her, you’re going to suffer. I won’t let you die with dignity. It will be a long and painful process,” I said, trying to see if Marinka had any injuries, but the connection was blurry.
