“No, well, yes. I am fine, but I have to grab Lilly and run.” I gave her the short version of the story. “So Sebastian is a monster and I’m leaving him. I bought us a bit of time, but we have to leave right away,” I told her, pacing around. I was breathing hard, trying to calm my racing heart and shut off my mind. The images from the past just kept pouring in, causing a bigger headache.

I could see moments when I was happy, in love with him. Times when he was sweet and caring, not like any other man I’d met before. But he was also a monster. And he’d cheated on me, the last time only a few days ago.

“What? No, why? Sebastian has his flaws but he is a good father and has been loyal to you, darling,” Penelope said, but she had no idea what she was saying.

She’d worked for Sebastian for so many years, but she had never slept with him. I remembered having this conversation with her now.

“He is not a good father and he has not been loyal. I just found out that he slept with some Russian woman when I was in a coma and then he did it again the other day, too. I’ve seen the evidence, Penelope. This world is not for me or my daughter. We have to leave him, get as far away as possible from him because he could find us,” I said, shaking.

My head was still hurting and I wished I could get to Dr. Stephens, but I couldn’t trust him now.

She was staring at me with confusion and apprehension, then she switched on the light in the kitchen and grabbed my hands.

“Sit down for a moment, Marinka. You’re shaking too much and you’re not thinking straight,” she said, dragging me to the table. “Tell me what Russian woman you are talking about?”

Penelope put the kettle on and advised me to take deep breaths. I knew I was safe here for a while. Pedro was going to be distracted with Sebastian, so I had time.

“Her name is Sofia and she is the don of the Russian mafia. She took over from Marcus, who’d made a deal with Sebastian a while back. I saw the pictures of her and Sebastian,” I explained.

She stared at me calmly and when the kettle started to boil, she got up and started making tea.

“Can you tell me what this Russian woman looked like?” she asked after a moment of silence. I wished I had a picture of her somewhere.

Damn it. Just then, my phone pinged. It was an email and I almost dismissed it but then, the subject got my attention. It said:use it wisely.

I didn’t recognise the sender and I wondered why it didn’t go to spam. Opening it, I found pictures of Sofia with several men I didn’t recognize. They were handing her some papers. She looked much younger than she was now—must have been a few years go.

I opened another document and it showed screenshots of emails between Sofia and some guy from the Federal Bureau of Investigation. She was accepting an assignment from him. My heart stopped and then, I glanced at Penelope.

It was true, what that guy Vinny had said. Sofia had worked for the Feds.

“What is it?” Penelope asked, and then I showed her the pictures of Sofia with the feds. She didn’t need to know the other details, but she wanted to see what Sofia looked like and I had a clear picture of her from the emails.

She stared at her for a long moment as though trying to figure out if she had seen her before.

“That woman didn’t sleep with Sebastian, Marinka. I remember her coming to see him almost two years ago. They talked in the living room for a while and then they vanished in his bedroom. She looked like the type of woman who always got what she wanted, but Sebastian threw her out shortly afterwards. I remember it clearly because I was working that day.”

CHAPTER31

Sebastian

I was pacingaround in the cell, my head throbbing. I shared the space with a bunch of drunks and drug addicts. My knuckles were bleeding, half of my face was numb, my nose was probably broken, and I must have dislocated my wrist when I was beating the shit out of that motherfucker who dared to touch my wife.

Everything had happened so fast I could hardly keep up. First, that bitch used that idiot Johnson to try to buy me off, and then Marinka betrayed me. I thought I was fucking dreaming when I saw her on that table, almost naked with some guy. She let him spank her and maybe even fuck her. I saw red. I threw myself on that guy, then started hitting him, punching him until he wasn’t moving anymore, until my breath was ragged and my hands were bloodied. I didn’t know how long I had been hitting him but at some point, someone was pulling me off him.

I punched the guy who touched me. It turned out later that he was one of Johnson’s assistants, then my brothers showed up, too. I asked Milo to hand me the gun while he and Sparky were trying to restrain me. All of a sudden, there were so many other people in that room, pushing me on the floor while I roared like crazy.

An officer came to the cell.

“Dimitrei, you’re out!” he shouted, opening the door.

I stared at him for a moment, thinking that there must have been some kind of mistake. There was no way I was able to get out on bail. My mind was much clearer now and I was certain I’d killed that unlucky fucker in front of hundreds of witnesses at the party. No judge would let me out.

“Are you sure you have the right name?” I asked.

“Yes, sir. Now please get out. You can collect your things shortly,” the officer said gruffly.

I just hoped Milo didn’t promise anything to Johnson, because I was ready to rip that greedy politician to pieces.
