My father had moved to America from Russia when he was young. I recently learned he was already dealing in heroin and cocaine before he married Mom. He had contacts in South America. When I told him I needed to find something on the don of the Russian Mafia locally, he wasn’t happy with the fact that I was now involved.

Sebastian wasn’t privy to the fact I’d asked my father for help and it was easier that way. Ever since Dad’s involvement in Russina’s death, they hadn’t discussed business at all.

My dad knew Sofia was dangerous, so protecting me was of the essence. But apparently, he had some information that could be relevant. Sebastian told me that he was dealing with her, but she’d tried to kill me, and she might attempt to cause more damage, so someone needed to show that bitch her place. I didn’t care who she was and what kind of people she knew. I wasn’t afraid of her.

“Would you like to order?” the waitress asked.

“No, I am waiting for someone,” I told her, then glanced at my phone. My father was running late and this wasn’t like him, so I got up and told the waitress to keep my table. I wanted to see if he was outside or maybe he was having trouble with parking. Sebastian was dealing with some shipment at the club. He wanted to have everything sorted before we left for our trip to France next week. Everything had been arranged and I just couldn’t wait.

Sebastian was supposed to take me to dinner to his brother’s house after the meeting with my father. I had met Roxanna, Milo’s wife, in the hospital after I got shot, so now I’d get to spend some time with them.

I stepped outside the restaurant and saw my father’s car pull up. I waved at him, wondering why he was taking so long. I couldn’t tell if he saw me or not, because he was on the phone.

I paced back and forth, getting impatient. At last, he opened the door to get out of the car, and there was a blast that threw me back against the wall. I must have hit my head and passed out for a little while.

When I finally came to, chaos reigned. I heard screams, and car alarms were going off. My ears rang. The parking lot was a scene out of a war zone and there was smoke everywhere. Someone was holding my arm, trying to get me to sit down on a bench by the restaurant doors.

After several long moments, I understood what happened. My father was dead, blown to smithereens. Someone must have planted a bomb in his car that exploded right before he got out.

I started screaming, holding my head and rocking back and forth. Shock and panic took over. People were running past me in all directions. Someone was talking to me, but I couldn’t hear.

My father was dead. Gone forever. Was this really happening? Would I pinch myself and find out it was all a nightmare, like that time with Sebastian?

My heart broke into a million pieces and I didn’t know if I could ever put it together again. What was I going to do? How was I going to tell Lilly? Tears fell freely down my cheeks, clouding my vision.

My head was spinning, but one thing was clear: Sofia had sent a message to me by executing my father right in front of me.

“How are you feeling?”Sebastian placed a steaming mug of tea on the bedside table.

There was a whiskey there too and I only just noticed it. I must have slept for a little while. I didn’t remember how I got home. Someone must have called him when the police and ambulances arrived. Several people had gotten injured.

I was confused and my head was hurting.

“I don’t understand. Why him and why now?” I asked, my eyes swollen from all the crying. I was supposed to be strong, but I just couldn’t get a grip. Losing my father hurt too much.

My father hadn’t been present when I was growing up, but recently, we’d reconnected. Lilly loved him so much, and we were finally a family.

Now, all that was over. Forever. I fucking hated that bitch. She had to be the one responsible for all this. Sebastian handed me the whiskey.

“I will find out everything, I promise you, but first drink this. It will make you feel better,” he assured me. I took the glass and downed the whole thing. The alcohol burned my throat, but it instantly took the edge off.

“And you’re going to take me with you. I am done sitting around. I am your wife and a part of your business. Whatever we do, we will do it together,” I demanded, my voice shaking.

My father had said he had something on Sofia. He was coming to see me when that bitch killed him. Surely, it wasn’t a coincidence that he died right in front of me. She wanted me to witness it.

My dad an old school kind of guy who wrote everything down. If he had it on him when he was coming to meet me, it was all gone.

Sebastian said he’d notified my mother over the phone. Lilly had no idea and she wasn’t going to understand. God, this was so unfair. She’d only just started to get to know him.

“All right, teacup. We will kill the bitch together, but for now you have to rest. We will talk about this in the morning,” he said, then he discarded his suit and got in the bed with me, cuddling me to his warm body.

I felt numb and my heart was broken. I shut my eyes, imagining what I would do to Sofia when I laid my hands on her. In my vision, she was screaming in agony when I cut her. She was begging for mercy, but I had none. Her death was going to be slow and painful. She was finally paying for everything. Then, I was drifting away, forgetting about this cruel reality.

The next few days were slow and my memories of that time were hazy. I remembered hugging Lilly a lot and just lying with her in bed. My mother had returned from Florida and apparently, she was making arrangements for the funeral. I just didn’t have the energy to think about that stuff. I knew it was important, my father had to be buried, but overall, I just needed some time out from this cruel world.

Sebastian was the epitome of the supportive husband, attentive and loving. He didn’t go to work, saying he had people who could take care of the business. He was there for me, always trying to cheer me up and showering me with so much affection. Yet, I wasn’t in a position to give back.
