“Yes, strawberries.” I freeze and give her a horrified look. Doesn’t she remember she’s allergic?

I open my mouth to tell her when Rex storms in. He pushes me out of the way and grabs some blueberries, setting them on the counter. Nicole gives him a big smile and pops a few in her mouth.

“Can I make you anything?” I ask Rex sweetly. I’m really trying here to make them happy. Though it’s hard. I know he is losing his patience with me and Matthan. The constant crying, and the fact I can’t have sex with him for a few more weeks is just making him more and more twitchy.

He gives me a look of shock and nods. “I’ll take some waffles too, Kitty.” I busy myself and get cooking, trying not to let it show how happy he made me by calling me ‘Kitty’ for the first time in weeks.

Nicole starts to babble about something, and just the sound of her voice, happy and carefree, brings tears to my eyes. It makes me think of the past.

Yesterday I tried to let her hold Matthan, but she refused. Called him a bastard and stormed away. Out of all the nasty comments I have been getting lately, I think that one hurt the worst.

She was so excited to be an aunt back then, and now she doesn’t even know who I am to her.

“I can’t believe you’re having a baby. Oh my god! I’m going to be an aunt,” Nicole whoops, then pulls me into a huge hug. I’m happy, if surprised, she decided to pop over to Rex’s and see me.

“Yeah, I still can’t wrap my head around it if I’m honest. Things have just been moving so fast,” I mutter quietly. Rexley isn’t home right now, but who knows if he’s listening.

He seems unhinged lately. I mentioned maybe going to see a doctor, and he just laughed it off.

“I know, Cat, but you have never acted your age. You have always been more of a mother to me than a sister. You have been cooking, cleaning, and handling adult things for years.”

I shrug it off, but I know it’s true. I never did get a childhood. I think the only time I got to act my age was when I was rebellious with Rex. All the good that did.

“But just think! We get to plan a baby shower and a wedding. I better be your Maid of Honor. I will cut Lorna for the job,” she says, wiping her nails on her shoulder like they are a weapon.

I laugh and nod. She pulls me tight into a hug, and I sigh.

“I love you, Sis.”

“You bitch!” A slap across my face brings me back to the task at hand. Fuck, I burnt the waffles. Rex pulls Nicole away from me and tries to calm her down. I toss the charcoal and start again.

When did this become my life?

I finish up, plate the food, then wipe my eyes and leave the kitchen. On the way, I glance at Nicole as she sits at the table and stares at the blue ocean view from the wall of windows. She seems content, peaceful. I just wish she didn’t hate me. I have been so alone these past years since Rexley stole everything from me. To find her again is a gift, at least to me. If I close my eyes, I can almost picture we’re just in a sister fight, and she still loves me.

CHAPTER10

THEN

REXLEY

Istill don’t know how I pulled it off, but fuck am I pleased. I pull into the driveway of the main house and cut the engine. My father greets me at the front door with a fist to the face. I laugh and shake my head, licking the drop of blood pooling on the corner of my mouth.

“You will regret that, old man,” I sneer and shove him aside.

“Kidnapping, Rexley! You have done a lot of shit, but this is the last straw. I’m going to have to do a lot of damage control this time. You better hope and pray that no one goes looking for answers. If this falls back on our family, I will shove you under the bus so fast. I don’t give a fuck about you sending those videos to the press anymore.”

I laugh and hand him the duffle bag in my hand, then turn and grab the wheelchair. Nicole woke up, and her vitals started to stabilize, but that just wouldn’t do. I needed her gone, or away. Honestly, I was fine with her going to Italy. She’s the dumbass who decided to drive her Nana’s car. I had cut the brakes months ago just in case the pills wouldn’t take the witch out.

I have never had much of an issue with Cat’s sister. She was always supportive of us, even if she did try to take Cat to Italy with her. She had left an open invitation for me as well. But life has a funny way of happening, so now I have Nicole Baker in my grasp, and the rest of the world thinks she’s dead.

Well except for my sadistic family and a few people my father paid off. He claims they will mind their own business, but I may need to take out a few more people. Really, the only way to keep a secret is if you're dead.

“Oh, Rexley, who is this?” my mother asks as she stumbles into the foyer. Nicole blinks up, confused but not frightened. One blessing from her accident is that she doesn’t know who she is. Amnesia, the perfect tool to accomplish my plan. Cat is starting to act more and more distant, I need to get her away and to the island. Where Cat, Nicole, Bizzy, and I can start over. She mentioned college again, and I almost lost my cool.

She can think that I am on board for now, but as soon as we graduate, we’re leaving. Even if I need to drug her and put her on the boat myself. What’s another count of kidnapping against me? It’s not like I’ve ever been caught.

“This is Ms. Baker, and she will be staying with you for a few weeks while I organize getting her into an institution,” I tell my mom, not that she’s coherent enough to understand. My father starts to laugh, and I clench my teeth.
