The lines of the tiles begin to move and swirl in puddles around my shoes. But I can’t see my shoes anymore, they are drowning in the floor.

What am I even doing here?

My head is spinning, and I put out my hand to try and feel for a wall, anything that can support me. I should be trying to escape. I need to get home. I need to get back to my family.

Where is my family?

I see the face of an older man. He is trying to reach out for me, but I pull away. He is going to take me away. He is going to torture me. He is going to send me to the Cuffs. I can’t go back there.

I won’t let him take me there.

I need to escape. I need to get as far away from the man as possible. Why is everything upside down? The man moves, but when he talks, his movement doesn’t quite match up with the sound of his words.

“Calm down,” the voice tells me. What does he mean? I am calm. I just need to escape-

I need to get out of here.

“Get your filthy hands off of me!” he put his hand on my shoulder, but I pull away, disgusted. “Don’t touch – don’t – DON’T TOUCH ME,” I yell. “Get off me!”

I feel his eyes on me, and I try to shake it away. But unlike his hand, I can’t shake away a gaze. He is going to take me away. He is going to-

I look around me and try to remember where I am.

“Emerson.” Someone says my name, but I can’t see where it’s coming from. Everything is captured in a blazing white light, and I can’t see anything besides it. “Jasper needs our help.”

“Jasper?” I say, my head tilting in confusion. That name sounds familiar. I am here to help Jasper.

Jasper.

Jasper.

Jasper.

I feel like I should know this person named Jasper, but his memory is only a blurry picture in my mind.

“Yes, Jasper is in trouble. He is going to die if we don’t get to him fast enough.” DIE? That’s not good. I need to save him.

But there is a little nagging voice in the back of my mind whispering to escape. Run, it tells me.

“Oh, dear. I suppose that we should stop him from dying then.” I tell the man, ignoring the voice inside my head. I can’t run when people are dying. That wouldn’t be okay. I start walking to find Jasper, but everything is still spinning around me. My head hurts. Why does my head hurt?

“Jasper is the other way,” a voice says from behind me. I turn around.

“Oh,” I say. “Jasper who?” Jasper. The name sounds familiar, but I can’t remember exactly who this Jasper is.

Jasper.

Jasper.

Jasper.

I feel like I should know this person but it’s like he is a memory that is just too far out of my reach.

“Jasper. He is your friend.” The man talking has dark, hard eyes and brown-turning-grey hair. He wears a dark blue button-up shirt, pants, and a flowing black coat. Something about the coat seems familiar too, but I just can’t place it. “You need to remember him.”

“But I don’t. How can I remember someone I don’t remember?” I look at this man quizzically and he smiles. He looks nice; like an old man weathered with time. Who is he and why is he here?

Why am I here?
