“You guys know Emerson?” I attempt to ask over their bickering. As I say her name, they instantly fall silent as if I have muted them.

“Do we know Emerson?” The sarcastic voice laughs accusingly. “We’re her family, of course we know her.” I hear a murmur of agreement among the others. “But, how do you know her?”

I think for a moment, wondering how in the world I am going to get myself out of this. “Well, I’m Jasper.” I start, knowing that the best way to tell them how I know her is to start with who I am, even though it will hurt. “Jasper Cunningham.” I hesitate. This can’t end well, them knowing who I really am.

Instead of an outburst of anger, I hear laughs littering the air. “Sucks to be you,” says the sarcastic voice.

“But how do you know Emerson? Do you know where she is?” The boy called Mason asks. He isn’t accusing like the other guy, but his voice still carries the same worried tone.

“I…umm,” how do I put this? Do I say that she’s trapped? She’s completely lost all her memory. “Yes, I know where she is. I met her at Calveron. I have been looking after her.” As soon as the words slipped out of my mouth, I know it’s a mistake.

“Emerson doesn’t need you looking after her,” The accusing voice spits in my direction. “What does that even mean anyway? Were you keeping her in line, making sure she doesn’t break out of her chains? Torturing her and dragging her to all her appointments with your murderer of a father. I know what you do to people like us there. Emerson claims that she’s never been there, and yet I’m the one comforting her when she screams about it in the middle of the night. So don’t you dare tell me that you are looking after her in that-”

“Jas?” A voice croaks next to me and I stop listening to the outrageous remarks coming from the other side of the room. I have no idea what his connection is to Emerson, but whatever it is, I don’t want to know.

“Tyler,” I reach over for him and try to pull him so he’s sitting up, which is very difficult considering both my hands are chained behind my back. “How are you?”

He groans, “besides feeling like a burning marshmallow?” I laugh. On the other side of the room, I can hear Emerson’s friends having a heated discussion, but I chose to ignore them. “Where are we, homeboy?”

“All I know so far,” I tell him, “Is that we are in a very dark room-”

“Good observation,” he says, and I imagine that if I could make out his face properly, it would be set in a smirk.

“And the people across from us are Emerson’s friends, one of whom seems intent on killing me.” I whisper so that they don’t hear.

“Wonderful,” Tyler comments. “So, you have no idea where we are?”

“My best guess is somewhere in the Black Opps command centre.”

Tyler stops for a minute, like he is thinking up some great plan. “Hey, gang,” he calls out to the people, and they stop talking immediately.

“What are you doing?” I whisper urgently to Tyler. Does he want to get us murdered?

“Just watch.” He says reassuringly, but since I have no clue what he is doing, and most of Tyler’s plans end with us getting into more trouble: I am not reassured whatsoever.

“How do you know who we are?” Mason asks, his voice continuing to remain steady.

“I’m Ransacked. I’d have to be blind, deaf and lame to not know who you guys are.” He laughs, and surprisingly the others laugh along with him.

“Just because you’re Ransacked, doesn’t mean that we’re going to trust you. What do you want?”

“I’m gonna assume you’re Hayden, am I right?” Tyler is met by a silence that can only be assumed to mean yes. “The cruel twin.” He laughs. What is he doing? He’s going to get us killed for sure.

“Do you want to say that again?” Hayden, the one who I am certain would kill everyone in this room if he had the chance, threatens.

“Hayden,” the other male voice warns.

“And you must be Crusoe, the nicer twin.” Tyler continues, completely unfazed by Hayden’s threats.

“That’s me,” the one named Crusoe says jokingly.

“And I’m going to guess that Mason, the leader, is here as well as the infamously beautiful Aubrey Waters.” I hear a shy laugh from the other side of the room, confirming his words.

“How do you know us so well?” Mason asks.

“What really matters is where we are and how we are going to get out of here?” I interrupt before Tyler digs himself into a hole. I have no idea how he so charmingly got everyone to listen to him, except Hayden, but I am certainly impressed.

“We don’t know where we are. All we remember was that we were out the front of Calveron when we saw an old lady,” Mason says.
