I didn’t get to delve deeper into Gill’s psyche, as Fin and Nemo lumbered back into the cabin.

“Over there is fine, Mira,” Fin said, and something—possibly a chair—scraped the floor.

“Anything else, sir?” Mira asked in her childlike voice.

“No, that’s all. Thank you, Mira.”

“Good day to you, sir.”

The cabin door closed as I finished cleaning the rest of Gill’s face and shoulders.

“Sit, my friend,” Fin said. “Eat until your heart is content.”

“Thanks, Captain,” mumbled Nemo.

“Princess,” Fin called out. “I bring news.”

“What news?” I asked, standing, eager to hear it.

Fin burst into the room with eyes dazzling like the sparkle of morning water. “The doctor who treated Nemes told us that the collector has a storage trove of magical items somewhere nearby in the Darkwoods.”

My heart had lifted from my talk with Gill. “Where is this trove? Does the collector have it guarded or protected with magical spells?”

“Maybe,” Gill said, rubbing his forehead. “Blade and the resistance might know where it is and how to get inside.”

The assassin? Sea god, no. After landing in his crotch, I never wanted to see that man again and be reminded of my shame. The event still haunted me, contributing to my nerves when I was around each of my mermen. But if that was our only hope of finding the dark pearl, then it was an avenue worth chasing.

“Go and speak with Verita,” I told Fin on my way to get Gill a plate of food. “Have him prepare four horses for us. We leave at first light.”
