Two more soldiers attacked Nemo. He beat them away with vicious swipes of his trident. The soldiers could barely deflect any of his blows. He was so huge he could take on two of them at once.

That left one soldier for me to deal with. Keeping one eye on Fin as he wrestled with Faraall, I faced my opponent. I swung the trident and struck his stomach. He bent over in pain but quickly recovered and slashed my arm with his weapon. I screamed and brought the shaft of my trident down on his back repeatedly until he sagged to the ground.

As I turned back to Fin, Faraall tugged a dagger from a sheath on his leather sash.

My fingers tightened around the trident.

“Fin,” I cried.

Faraall slashed Fin’s arm.

Blood poured down his upper arm. Fin grunted and punched the commander in the jaw.

Dark thoughts crashed in my brain. My breaths came in fits and starts. Faster than a lightning bolt, I raced over to them. With all my strength, I jammed the triton into Faraall’s chest.

Someone grabbed me by the arm and yanked me around.

I spun around and faced the soldier. In a panic, I kicked him in his privates. He moaned and hunched over. His grip on his trident grew slack, and I snatched it away, quickly flipped the weapon, and used the shaft to deliver a sharp blow to the soldier’s thigh. According to my instructor, the move deadened the muscle. Down the soldier went as his leg buckled. I prepared to finish him off, but Fin pushed me out of the way. He drove the trident into the man’s back and twisted.

I closed my eyes at the sight all the blood.

Fin’s big, warm hand landed on my back, and he rubbed my tightened muscles.“Where’d you learn how to fight?”

“Lessons.” I offered him a smile, even though I felt sick inside.

“Explains everything,” he muttered as he spun around, hurtling his trident through the air

The weapon’s blades pierced one of the soldiers in the back. The man wheezed and sank to his knees. Fin moved up behind him and kicked him to the ground.

My eyes snapped shut, my mind blocking out the sight of all the blood and gore.

Nemo screamed. My heart seized, and my eyes flew open. I spun around to find him on his knees with a trident wedged in his thigh.

Above him, another soldier drew back his trident, preparing to pierce Nemo through the chest.

Fin snuck up behind an approaching soldier, put his trident over the man’s throat, and choked him.

I called upon my aqua, and the power of the sea rose in me. The magic poured out in the form of a spear, which I directed toward the mersoldier, piercing him between his chest and shoulder. He dropped his weapon and his head fell to his chest.

This provided Nemo the distraction he needed, and he punched the other guy in the back of the head, knocking him out. Then he drove his weapon through the soldier’s heart.

Flipping hell. They were all dead but the one I’d knocked out.

“Shit, Princess.” Nemo collapsed to the ground. “That was awesome.”

The praise washed off me. I was more concerned with his wellbeing than fanning my ego, and I rushed to my merman’s aid.

Movement caught my eye, and I looked over my shoulder in time to watch the merman I’d battled drag Faraall into the lagoon. The two men disappeared below the water.

“Shit.” Fin glanced between the escaping mersoldiers and Nemo. In the end, Fin’s concern for his friend must have won out. He came to us, grabbed Nemo by the back of his collar, and dragged him into the water.

Nemo groaned.

“Sorry about this, my friend.” Fin wrapped both hands around the trident’s shaft and yanked the weapon from Nemo’s leg.

Nemo’s pain-filled bellow echoed off the cavern walls. Water splashed up in our faces as Fin dropped the bloody trident into the water.

I stuffed a fist into my mouth to keep from crying out as Nemo writhed in agony, his hands covering his wound.
