Chapter 11

“Wanna play a game of clam, seaweed, rock?” Nemo asked.

He, Fin, and I stood beside the wagon, waiting for the servant of the tavern we’d slept in the previous night to retrieve our horses.

Nimian and I used to play that game all the time as children. We’d loved it. Our mother always told us to stop it at the dinner table. Apparently, playing hand games under the table wasn’t becoming of two princesses.

“I warn you,” I said, clenching one hand into a fist, trying to shake off my earlier disappointment. “I’m the merworld champion.”

Nemo laughed. “Challenge accepted, Princess.”

“Call me Nyssa, okay?” I said. “No moreprincess. I’m as much a princess as you three are merdancers.”

Both Nemo and Fin belly laughed at the comparison.

“You’re hilarious, Prin…” Nemo began.

Fin thumped Nemo’s chest.

“Sorry…” Nemo gave me a sheepish smile. “I mean,Nyssa.”

I grinned like a clam about to seize a fish for dinner. Nemo was about to be destroyed by the best.

Nemo held out his fist, prepared for the game. “Get ready to be beaten, Nyssa.”

Yeah, right.“On the count of three. One. Two. Three,” I said and flashed a seaweed.

Nemo flashed a clam.

Damn. He’d beaten me. Annoyance flashed through me. His sweet, mocking smile only stoked my temper.

Fine. Now it was my time to beat him.

“One, two, three.” This time I showed a coral.

Again, he beat me with seaweed.

Heat scaled along the back of my neck. Okay. I’d admit I was a little competitive. Okay,a lotcompetitive.

“Decider round,” taunted Nemo.

Poseidon. I had to win this.

I counted, and on the last number I threw up a clam. His coral trumped me.Damn it.

“You win,” I begrudgingly admitted as I shook his hand.

“Oh, is the champion of the merrealm a little upset?” He gave me a huge hug and tickled my arm.

His coral scent filled me, sending my senses into a frenzy. My hormones spiked. Electrical pulses ravaged my skin. My heartbeat tripled, pounding in my ear.

Poseidon. What were these three doing to me? All these new sensations drove me wild, like a dolphin in heat…and dolphins were known for their horny nature.

Fin decided to jump in on the joke. “You shouldn’t tick off a princess, Nemo. She might feed you to her pet sharks.”

What? Now that was ridiculous. “I don’t have pet sharks.”

“I bet you do,” Fin teased. “Reserved for fiends like my friend, here.” He wrapped his arm around Nemo’s neck and patted him on the chest.
