My sister’s eyes, like those of an orca determined to catch a seal, landed on me. “Nyssa, I’ve been looking for you everywhere.”

Her breathless voice pounded in my skull.

The Sharkrider put a protective arm over me. “The princess came to play. Shall we ask her to have a drink with us?”

“No.” The word rushed out of my head.

I had to get my sister out of there as fast as possible.

“Nimian, what are you doing here?” I said, fighting the panic drumming through my body. “How…? How’d you find me?”

Shark Bait bar was located on the outskirts of the Tritonian kingdom. Nobles rarely ventured to this part of town except for business or royal matters. It was considered dirty and where the low-lives hung out. Certainly not the kind of establishment Nimian would frequent. I wagered she was probably bursting to tell me the latest scandal and court gossip, such as which handsome noble she was necking with behind Father’s back. What merman she wished to date next. Or which rich mergeek one of her friends had hooked up with. Her news must have been major for her to venture all the way out here, looking a little disheveled from the exercise, her eye makeup smeared.

“Faraall told me you were here,” said Nimian.

My stomach lurched. How did the commander of the merarmy know that? Was he keeping tabs on me? On several occasions, he’d exhibited behavior suggesting he might have a crush on me. But I was totally not interested in that creep. If he was following me, then I’d have to be even more discreet.

“Sugarfins, you two know each other?” The Sharkrider smirked as he twirled a lose curl around his fingers. “How ‘bout some double action, princess? Cause I’m totally up for it.”

Poseidon. I’d forgotten all about him and his dirty mind.

Nimian’s scales flashed red. She slapped him across the face, and I flinched.

“Take it easy, Sugarfins.”

“Touch me or my sister again, and I’ll have my father harpoon you.”

I bit my lip and hugged my arms over my waist.

It took a few seconds to dawn on the Sharkrider. His gaze skimmed her crown of starfish, the silver-and-blue scales on her neck and tail.

“You’re royal?” He glanced between Nimian and me.

Flipping hell. The fish was out of the net now.
