“Oh, are you going to see her later?”

I wasn’t sure if Cheyenne would want my mom to know that she’d spent the night. Plus, if what we had was only sex, there was no reason to get my mom’s hopes up. She’d wanted me to settle down and give her grandbabies for years now, and I knew that nothing would make her happier than if the person I did that with was Cheyenne.

“Yep,” I answered casually.

“Is she with you now?” my mom asked in a way that told me she already knew the answer.

“She’s sleeping.”

“Oh, so you did have a long night.”

“I gotta go, I’ll call you and let you know what she says after she wakes up.”

“Okay, Mitch is scanning the picture now so I can email it to her.”

Out of the blue, I was hit with an overwhelming appreciation for my mom. When my mom first told me about my dad, I’d been shocked. It had taken me these few days to process it. Now that I had, I could see what a sacrifice she’d made for me, and for him. She was one of the most selfless people I knew, and I didn’t tell her enough what she meant to me.

“Thanks, Mom.”

“Oh, it’s no trouble. Besides, Mitch is doing the heavy lifting. I didn’t even know we had a scanner. I thought the dang thing was a printer.”

“I’m not talking about the picture, Mom. I’m talking about everything… Everything you do for the people you love. You have the biggest heart, and it touches everyone you meet. You make everything around you better, happier. I know I don’t tell you enough but I’m damn lucky to be your son.”

The line was quiet for a moment before I heard my mom sniffing.

“Don’t cry, Mom.” I hated hearing my mom cry.

“You can’t say something sweet like that and then tell me not to cry!” she snapped back.

I chuckled, “Bye, Mom. I love you.”

“I love you, too, dumplin’.”

After hanging up I walked back into my bedroom. I had a big decision to make. To wake or not to wake, that was the question. I could get Cheyenne up and tell her about my mom’s discovery or let her sleep for a few more hours and then tell her after she’d gotten some rest. I was still pondering my choices when my decision was made for me and her eyes fluttered open.

She glanced around for a second, clearly trying to get her bearings and as soon as her eyes landed on me her face split in a wide grin. “Morning.”

“Good morning.” I lowered down onto the bed beside her, lifted my arm and she snuggled into her spot, curled up against me with her head lying on my chest.

“Where did you go?” she asked sleepily.

“My mom called and I went in the bathroom to talk to her because I didn’t want to wake you up. But I’m glad you’re awake because she was actually calling with news for you.”

Her head reared up and I saw that she was definitely alert now. “She found it? The picture?”

“Yes. She did. And Mitch found an address for him. He only lives a couple hours from here.”

“Seriously!” She sat up and I noticed that she had a large crease along her cheek and her hair was messy on one side and she’d never been more beautiful.

“Yep. She’s scanning the photo to email it to you with his address.”

“She is?” she asked.

I nodded.

“I need to take a shower.” She popped up out of bed like a snake from a can and I watched as she scrambled toward the bathroom.

I was sure that we’d swing by her house for a change of clothes but after that we’d be headed on another road trip.

It looked like today wasn’t going to be a “Sunday” we spent in bed like I’d hoped. But this was more important. And hey, there was always tomorrow, which actually was a Sunday.
