CHAPTER 32

Cash

Asliver of sunlight was peeking in from the inch or so gap in my blackout curtains that were not completely shut. The light perfectly illuminated Cheyenne’s face. She looked like an angel sleeping beside me. A snoring angel, but an angel nonetheless.

When we spent the night together at the motel, I had to get up before Cheyenne woke because we needed to get on the road. But today, there was nothing that we needed to do.

I was on vacation. Cheyenne didn’t have any classes to teach.

I’d heard people talk about having lazy Sundays in bed, but the thought had never appealed to me. I’d hung out with girlfriends in the past on the weekend. But I’d never been tempted to stay in bed all day with one.

Technically this was a Saturday but that was all I wanted to do with Cheyenne. I watched her sleeping peacefully beside me and knew that I would be perfectly happy if I could stay in this moment forever.

She snorted as she mumbled something incoherent under her breath and I grinned to myself. I’d never thought of snoring as an attractive quality, but Cheyenne managed to make it one. I’d fallen asleep last night to the melodic hum of her sawing logs. That and her laughter were the sweetest sounds in the world to me.

In the back of my mind, I knew that I needed to talk to Billy sooner rather than later. But first, I needed to talk to Cheyenne. I needed to find out if she was taking this as seriously as I was.

There was a good chance that she wouldn’t want to settle down with someone. She’d had limited experience and as much as I wanted to put a ring on it, she may need to go out and sow some wild oats. The thought of her dating made me want to puke, but if that’s what she wanted, needed to do, then I had no choice but to step back.

I’d told her last night that we could be anything she wanted, but I still didn’t know what that was.

Were we a thing? Whatever that meant.

I knew that Cheyenne loved me and loved having sex with me. But not all loves were created equal. Her love for me could be a purely friendship-based main course with a side of benefits.

I’d ask her point-blank today. I needed to know. I didn’t want to ruin what we had but I also needed to guard my heart if this was just about her exploring her sexual side and not the emotional connection I was feeling.

My mind was so wrapped up in my thoughts about that when my phone rang. I jumped, startled by the sound. As quickly as I could, I turned and grabbed the device, silencing the call. At the same time that my thumb hit the silence button, I saw that it was my mom calling.

I checked to see if the disruption had woken up my snoring beauty, but thankfully she was undisturbed.

With the agility and stealth of a ninja, I climbed out of bed and went into the bathroom, quietly shutting the door behind me.

“Hello,” I answered, my voice coming out rough and raspy.

“Oh no! Did I wake you?” my mom exclaimed.

“No. I’ve been up for about an hour.”

“Are you getting sick?” she asked.

“No, it was just a late night.”

“Oh right! Jimmy’s wedding. How was that?”

“It was really beautiful.”

“Sabrina would be so happy that her sons aren’t letting that stupid curse stop them from finding love.” I heard the sadness in my mom’s voice as she talked about her best friend. I knew that seeing Cheyenne had brought back a lot of good memories for her, but I was pretty sure it had reopened the wound of losing her closest friend. “Sabrina had an endless capacity for love. She treasured love above everything else in life.” I heard my mom sniff on the other side of the line before clearing her throat. “Anyway the reason I called is, I found him.”

“Cheyenne’s father?” I clarified.

“Yes. I knew that I had a picture of the two of them and she’d written his name on it, Oscar Lewis. Mitch looked him up and we have an address for him. He only lives a couple of hours drive from Firefly.”

“Really?” My heart started racing with excitement. I knew how much this meant to Cheyenne.

“Yes! I can’t wait to call Cheyenne and give her the good news.”

“I can tell her,” I responded before thinking.
