CHAPTER 23

Cheyenne

Iwas sure that was the song from Anchorman playing loudly in the room next to us.

“Yeah, it’s called ‘Afternoon Delight’,” Cash answered me looking sexier than he had any right to.

When I was in the shower he’d changed into a T-shirt and sweats. I wasn’t sure if other men looked as hot in such casual clothes, but when it came to Cash, it was my favorite thing to see him in. He looked sculpted, and comfy at the same time.

During movie nights, it was his usual attire and all I ever wanted to do was curl up next to him on his couch, snuggle against him and slip my hand beneath the hem of his shirt and touch his washboard abs. But I hadn’t. I’d taken my cues from him, stayed on my end of the couch and kept my cuddles and hands to myself.

I’d been so nervous when I came out of the shower not only because of our impending talk but also because I’d decided to wear a white T-shirt, panties, and nothing else. I doubted this ensemble would even make Nadia’s top ten list, but for me, it was downright scandalous.

The brief distraction of hearing the song playing loudly had assisted in calming my nerves, and now it was back to the task at hand. This was it. The moment I’d been waiting for, for months.

If I had planned it myself, the setting couldn’t have been more perfect. Cash and I were alone in a hotel room. We were hundreds of miles away from anyone we knew, meaning there’d be no surprise guests or prying eyes. The night of the wedding had already been brought up and he’d agreed to talk about it. Now, all I had to do was open my mouth and speak.

And when I did, this came out. “It still sounds bad outside.”

Come on, Cheyenne, my inner cheerleader encouraged me. Pull it together.

“Yep. I don’t think it’s going to clear up anytime soon.”

“Do you think we’re going to stay tonight?”

As much as the responsible adult in me knew it would best if this delay only cost us a few hours so that we could get back on the road and home in plenty of time for the wedding tomorrow, the virgin who was in love with my brother’s best friend was crossing her fingers, toes, and legs, well…no not legs, but fingers and toes that the weather conditions would keep us stranded.

Never in my wildest dreams had I thought that I’d be on Team Storm, but here I was.

“Yeah, I do.”

Inside I was jumping up and down, but outwardly, I casually shrugged as if it didn’t matter to me one way or another. “Oh.”

“Do you want to sit?” he motioned to the bed.

“Okey-dokey,” I replied lamely.

Okey-dokey?!

Okey-dokey is not sexy. It was almost as bad as the swallowed burp and thumbs up I’d given him when he came up to tell Reagan that Hank was on his way. I climbed onto the bed and tried to put my dorky faux pas out of my head. I leaned back against the headrest and tucked my legs beneath me.

“What do you remember about the night of the wedding?” Cash repeated his question as he lowered down on the edge of the bed and shifted so his upper body was turned toward me but his feet were still on the floor.

“Um,” I licked my lips nervously “I remember wanting to dance with you. I’ve seen the video, so I know it did not play out how I thought it was in my head. I’m so sorry.”

Cash ignored my apology. “Do you remember anything you told me?”

Just as he finished his question the song ended. I took a deep breath as silence filled the empty space, knowing that my entire life had led up to this moment. Just when I was about to speak when a familiar tune began to play again.

“They just played this,” I stated the obvious.

“It’s been on repeat,” Cash explained, looking annoyed.

We both looked at each other for a moment before we started cracking up. For some reason being stranded in a cheap motel in Kansas in the middle of a storm with Afternoon Delight playing through the walls was comical.

I bent over slightly and my towel fell off my head. I’d wrapped my hair up in it so it wouldn’t drip, but I was pretty sure the excess moisture would have been absorbed by now. I pulled it off and tossed it on the nightstand. When I settled back my cold, wet hair fell down my back and I shivered as I adjusted my legs. The movement caused my oversized V-neck T-shirt to slip off my shoulder. I didn’t miss Cash’s reaction when my bare skin was exposed.

His nostrils flared and the look in his already heated stare turned up to sizzling in the blink of an eye. I hadn’t meant to be seductive but I wasn’t mad if it had happened unexpectedly. We both stopped laughing and just stared into one another’s eyes.
