CHAPTER 46

Cash

“And now the bride and groom are going to share their first dance as husband and wife.” The DJ announced as Cheyenne and I walked into the center of the dance floor. Our reception was being held in the parking lot of the drive-in movie theater.

When Cheyenne had mentioned it, I hadn’t really understood her vision but now that we were here it was perfect, just like Cheyenne. We’d served concession stand food for dinner, which everyone loved and had saved us on catering. Half the parking lot had been converted into a dance floor which had string lights hanging above it. And Cheyenne, Mitch, and my mom had put together a montage reel of pictures and videos of Cheyenne and I growing up from kids to adults. It had been playing on a loop and was a big hit.

The first few chords of the song played, and I didn’t instantly recognize it. It wasn’t until the first line of lyrics were sung that I realized what song it was.

“Is this…”

She nodded, smiling widely, her eyes sparkling. “Yes, it is.”

A slow, acoustic version of Afternoon Delight was playing through the speakers. When Cheyenne had asked if I cared if she chose our first song, I’d told her all I cared about was her saying yes, the rest of the day could be anything she wanted, I’d never guessed that she’d choose this song.

I chuckled as I pulled her into my arms, and she molded into me. Memories of the motel room, our first time together came flooding back to me.

That had only been a few months ago, but it felt like a lifetime had passed.

Today had been a whirlwind of activity and this felt like the first time we’d gotten a moment to ourselves, even though we were still surrounded by a hundred or so guests.

“You are so beautiful,” I whispered against the top of her head as she rested her cheek against my chest. “Breathtaking.”

She lifted her head up, her eyes meeting mine. “You’re not so bad yourself.”

“I am the luckiest man in the world. I can’t believe that you’re my wife, that we’re gonna spend the rest of our lives together. I can’t wait to start our family together.”

Her lips twitched as I spoke, and her body tensed slightly. I knew that we both wanted kids. We’d talked about it long before we’d been a couple.

I didn’t want her to feel any pressure about my desire to have kids with her. “I’m not saying we have to start today, but I would like to practice,” I teased. “A lot of practice.”

“We might not need to practice.” She grinned and I noticed, for the first time today, that she had dark circles under her eyes.

As much as I was enjoying our wedding, I couldn’t wait to get Cheyenne alone so that I could strip her out of her dress and make sweet love to her. I’d spent the night at Billy’s last night because she wanted to keep the tradition of us not seeing each other the night before the wedding. I’d hated being apart from her.

“If you’re tired we don’t have to—”

“No. It’s not that. I mean, we might not need to practice because…” She took a deep breath.

“You’re pregnant?” I blurted out.

“Shh!” She hushed me as her eyes darted around. Thankfully, since it was an outside venue and there were speakers every few feet for cars, no one could hear us out on the dance floor.

“Are you?” I needed confirmation.

“I took six tests this morning. They are all positive.”

Without thinking about it I picked her up and swung her around, holding her tightly. She giggled and nuzzled her head into my shoulder.

Then I realized that she was carrying precious cargo and set her down gently. “Are you okay? I didn’t hurt you, did I?”

She beamed up at me, placing her hand on my cheek as she shook her head. “No. I’m okay. I was really nauseous earlier, but I’m fine now. Just tired.”

I stopped swaying back and forth. “Do you want to sit down?”

“No. I want to finish our first dance.”

“Right.” For a moment there I’d completely forgotten about this being our first dance. I’d forgotten we were at our reception. I’d forgotten everything except my wife was carrying my baby. “I didn’t think there was anything that could make me happier today, but you just did.”
