“Dada dada,” Amelia cooed.

When I opened the door, I saw that my mom was already crying. “Hello, precious girl.” She dropped her bags and reached for her grandchild.

I handed my baby to her and watched as my mom cradled her in her arms. She’d wanted a grandchild for so long. I knew that she loved Mitch’s kids and grandkids and they accepted her and treated her as their own, but there was something special about her only son having a baby girl.

“I just love that baby smell.” My mom inhaled as she snuggled Amelia close to her chest and swayed back and forth with her.

“It’s the best.”

We went into the front room and I tried to visit with my mom but she only had eyes for Amelia. I had to laugh. Never in my life had my mother been less interested in me.

She and Amelia were reading a book she’d brought when there was a loud knock at the door.

“Expecting more company?” My mom asked.

“It might be Marissa. I think she was nervous to leave Amelia but also nervous to meet you.” I explained as I walked to the door.

“Why would she be nervous?” My mom asked normally then her voice morphed into baby talk which had been happening for the past hour. “I can’t wait to meet your mommy. No, I can’t.”

The same smile that had been on my face since my mom arrived was still there when I opened the door and then it fell. It wasn’t Marissa. It was Billy.

“Hey, can we talk?”

“Billy!” My mom called out before I had a chance to respond.

He tilted his head to look around me and he smiled widely. I opened the door and he walked inside. “Mrs. Malone, I didn’t know you were back in town.”

“Of course, I am. I had to come meet my grandbaby!” My mom beamed as she held Amelia in her arms. “Isn’t she gorgeous?”

“She sure is.” Billy crossed the room and hugged my mom and smiled down at my daughter.

“Can you believe our Cash is a daddy?”

“No. I really can’t.” Billy shook his head as he stared down at my daughter.

“Mom, can you take Amelia out in the back? She loves the swing.”

I had a swing on my back deck that I never used but Amelia loved sitting in it and listening to the ocean waves.

My mom glanced between me and Billy. I clocked the moment she clued into the fact that things weren’t exactly copacetic between us.

“Okay, but, you boys play nice.” She wagged her finger at us before grabbing Amelia’s bag and heading out the back.

I put my hands in my pockets. “What’s up?”

Billy shrugged. “I’m a dick.”

As soon as he said that my shoulders relaxed knowing that everything was going to be okay between us.

“Tell me something I don’t know.”
