“Have you seen that castle?” the girl babbled into her ear. “It’shuge. Is that where you live? Are there any princesses in there?”

Nadia only smiled and knew Nell and Harmiston would hit it off in their loquacious ways. Besides, there would be time for so much of her girl’s questions now that Nell could finally come and visit her.

Nell squealed and twisted under Nadia’s arm. “Victoria!” she shouted and ran over to her.

“Aw,” Aksel said as he and Nicolai came over. “Now you know how it feels when she sees someone more interesting.” He laughed and pulled Nadia into a hug. “It’s so good to see you, Nad. We were worried there for a while.”

“Him too?” Nadia asked jokingly when Aksel released her.

“Nicolai most of all. Couldn’t sleep. Gnawed on his nails. It got bad there for a while.”

Nicolai snorted and then nodded toward Nell who was busy chatting to Victoria and Harmiston both. “Her eyes turned yellow in the Shade.”

Nadia nodded. “That is to be expected. But she won’t be able to shift in a few years yet.”

“This is all so strange,” Aksel muttered. As an Earthsider he’d grown up never knowing about any other realm than his own. He left them to join his daughter and the other two.

“So,” Nicolai began while they watched them. “Public displays of affection outside your place of work, Nad. Becoming the Queen’s Haunt has made you soft.”

“Or free,” she offered.

Nicolai shrugged and put an arm around her shoulders before they too went through the gate to join the others. “Well,” he figured, “stranger things have happened.”

She nodded. “But none better.”
