“I do love that idea. And more.”

“What? Oh,” he said when she moved right up to him and kissed him.

“An excellent idea, Chronicler,” she murmured onto his lips as he put his arms around her, kissing her back. “I also know of some small silver-light devices which can help against the remaining hybrids.”

“You do?”

“Mm-hmm. Thought you’d like that surprise. We need to do some digging though.” She deepened the kiss.

“Yes … wait,” he managed after a few beats. “I thought we were supposed to be professional when at work,” he teased, and she could feel his smile against her lips.

“No one can see,” she said between kisses. “Stop being so serious.”

“Oh,I’mthe serious one?”

An explosion of pink bubbles broke through the monochrome of the gray smoke and Harmiston jumped back while Nadia had her dagger drawn and was facing the interruption.

“Oh no,” she blurted when she realized. “Don’t tell me the Agad-Agama lizards are here in the Palace too?”

“Uh, yes. I forgot to tell you. One of them must have gotten into the boxes I had brought from the Cube library the other day.

“And?”

“I might have stepped on it. Purely by accident.”

Of course,” Nadia said and sheathed her dagger. “Because otherwise, you made a copy on purpose.”

“Uhm … actually, it divided into four.”

“Harm …”

The door was opened and a scream came. “Fire!”

Harmiston whirled around and removed the dome and smoke alike. “No-no,” he shouted to be heard. “No fire. Only me.”

The smoke cleared fast, and Nadia was surprised to see the windows were open. The smoke had remained in the room despite that. He truly was getting stronger at controlling his magic. The clear air revealed Victoria by the door, looking surprised and then simply going with it. “All right then,” she said and then looked to Nadia with a smile. “A page came from the gate and found me first. They’re here!”

Nadia couldn’t help her smile then, but these two were not people she hid anything from. “Let’s go.”

The three of them hurried outside and through the garden of the forecourt of the Palace. Far to their right, the Cube arose in its dark uninviting presence.

“It’s been so long,” Nadia said.

“It’s only been six months,” Harmiston pointed out.

“I know. They had to wait for the holiday break.”

“I heard about that,” Victoria said. “Winter solstice or something?”

“Something like that.” Nadia wasn’t sure about all Earthside customs. She only knew what she needed to survive there. She eyed the gate and sped up, hearing Victoria groan as her high heels clicked like mad on the ground while she tried to keep up.

Half a minute later, Nadia saw them.

Nell jumped up and down and waved at the sight of her. Nadia hurried through the gate, barely having time to give Ayd who was on duty a quick nod. Then her daughter barreled into her and hugged her waist.

“Mamma, I’m so happy to see you.”

“I’m happy to see you too, sweetie,” she said and bent down to hug Nell properly.
