“He betrayed me for that bitch.” Artem shut his eyes, pressing fingers to his temples. “I need you to locate him and his precious lifeblood. Once you find them, you contact me.”

“How do you expect me to find him?”

Artem’s eyes opened, vengeance seeping off him. He would do anything to kill Darius. Brutally. Eva could feel Artem’s desire to torment him.

Whatever Darius had done, he’d never be able to take it back.

Whatever he did, he did it forher.

“Because, Gedeon, if Darius Fischer trusts anyone with his secrets, it’s you. When you find him, you will be rewarded. Don’t fail me, warrior.”

Gedeon’s eyes glistened when Artem mentioned being rewarded, promising, “You won’t be disappointed.”

Gasping, Eva broke free from her vision, dropping her arms to her sides and allowing the scene in front of her to fade.

She wasn’t shocked that Gedeon chose to obey Artem, despite having to deceive Darius to do so. Everyone here did anything Artem asked, fear driving them forward.

Whatdidshock her?

The was the fact that Dariusdidn’tobey Artem.

But, as she thought deeper into it, was she really surprised? She wasn’t entirely sure she was, because she had already started to believe Darius when he said she was no longer alone.

When Artem impatiently asked, “Well? What did you see?” Eva didn’t have to think twice about her answer.

As always, she would lie by giving a partial truth. “No one betrays you,” she told him without a second thought, refusing to give Darius “But someone will prove their loyalty to you in extraordinary ways.”

Keep some of the truth, distract him from the greater lie.

Artem perked up, seeming too concerned by her closing statement than to think too deeply into the lie she started with. “And do you know who does this?” He sounded composed, though Eva knew he was anything but. Clearly, loyalty was important to him.

Noted.

He needed to know who he could trust above all others, and she wasn’t going to disappoint.

“Gedeon. Gedeon does.”

Chapter Twenty-Eight

Darius Fischer

She was playing fucking games with him.

Darius specifically told Evanotto do exactly what she was doing. Should he be even slightly surprised that she didn’t listen? No, he shouldn’t. She didn’t like him. She admitted exactly that only moments ago.

Whether she hated him or not didn’t matter. What mattered was keeping her alive, despite her dislike of him. He knew some part of her liked him, wanted to open up to him, and relished in his kisses.

Save her now, make her love me later,he determined.

The plan sounded much simpler than it actually was.

Considering everything that played out in front of him just now, he was almost thankful that she didn’t envision anyone betraying Artem. If she did, Artem wouldn’t have taken it well. He would’ve lashed out on her.

No one will betray Artem because they’re terrified of him,Darius concluded. Everyone was so terrified of him, in fact, that no one dared to talk poorly about him behind his back. Being unable to vent about him led to a lack of shared fears, and more importantly, a lack of camaraderie.

Everyone here believed they were in this world alone.

After witnessing Eva’s clear act of defiance against Artem, and everyone’s captivated reactions to her actions, Darius began to wonder if he was actually alone in this world, or if he was only led to believe he was alone in it.
