It was over. He knew.

Quickly, he started walking towards her. The crowd seemed to part before him, as if he were Moses parting the Red Sea. They were all watching him intently and whispering behind their hands as he strode past them. Everyone had stopped speaking now and was watching him walk towards her. They were like gamblers at a cock show, fervently waiting for the first sign of blood. The moment of confrontation between the Beast and his Beauty.

And still, she could not move to save her life.

He was upon her. Firmly, he took her arm, steering her through the crowd towards the front entrance. He didn’t say a word. The crowd watched them avidly. She gazed up at him mutely. His anger was palpable; she could feel it trembling through him. When they were finally out of the house, he practically pushed her into the carriage, slamming the door behind them.

“Jackson…” she whimpered, almost swaying with distress. “Please, let me explain…”

“Not a word,” he barked at her, his eyes glittering with rage. “Not until we are back at the house and alone. I forbid it entirely.”

She shrank back from him, desperately holding in the tears. The journey back to the house seemed to take forever. All she could think was that she had been so close. So very close to telling him. But now her very worst fears had come true… and everything was lost.
