“Sure, come on in.” I tucked away my notepad and scooted my stool in the direction of the car as Walker entered.

A low whistle emerged from him. “Nice. That’s a Plymouth Fury, right?”

I nodded. “Surprised you recognize it. Most people mistake it for a Belvedere.”

“As if I wouldn’t recognize Christine.” He ran his hand over the smooth hood. “You going to paint it red like the books and movie?”

“I don’t know. I thought about it, but it seems kind of too obvious.” I wrinkled my nose.

“At the same time, any other color might prove distracting.”

“Yeah.” Red would garner attention and probably the higher price.

“What’s that hunk of junk?” He pointed at the bike leaning on the workbench.

“A trashed bike. Found it where I was attacked.” I didn’t mention that it would be my next project.

“Should have left it there.” His lips turned down in disapproval.

“You kidding? I couldn’t leave it there. This hunk of metal saved me.” I patted the dented fender. “It’s going to be beautiful once I clean it up.”

“Are you sure you want to do that considering who owned it?”

The remark stunned me into momentary silence before I sputtered, “You recognize the bike?”

“Yeah. It used to belong to the guy who owned the junkyard way back when.”

Having done my homework, I muttered, “Killian ‘Junkdog’ Mahoney.”

The detective’s face tightened. “I see you’ve heard of him.”

“Not really. Mostly read that he was the previous owner of the yard and disappeared when the cops started harassing him.”

“We had reason. Mahoney was not an upstanding citizen.”

The use ofweprompted me to ask, “Did you have many run-ins with him?”

“Yeah. But the guy was slick. Never could pin anything on him.” He sounded disappointed.

“I found a newspaper article that hinted he might have been involved in some grisly murders.”

“Not just might. Mahoney was our main suspect. We’d applied for a warrant to arrest him; only someone ratted us out. By the time we went to serve it, he’d split.”

My curiosity wanted to know. “Did anyone search for him?”

“Yes. To no avail. He remains a wanted man to this day.”

“For a wanted man, I had the hardest time finding anything about him online.”

“Would you like me to send you his official poster? I believe they’re still offering a reward.”

“Yes, actually. A picture would be useful,” was my pert reply.

“Useful for what?”

“What if he comes back here?”

The detective blinked at me. “Why would he do that?”
