“As long as everyone helps to keep the company running properly the money will be there to do everything we plan, and everyone will be prosperous. In order to keep pollution down we have a new kind of vehicle. Buses are available to anyone not just employees and they will go pretty much anywhere you might need to go. We will also have dealerships but only the low pollution vehicles that we bring in are allowed in the country. I believe if you have one of these you will very much appreciate it. If you decide to purchase one of these there is a nice employee discount.”
Another hand went up in the air. Carler nodded. “I'm Thomas. Have I seen one of these buses?”
“It's what we took from the airport to here. The other vehicles you have probably not seen but they will be bringing some in soon. They have their own power source, and you will not need to buy anything because they will be running on their special battery. The only stipulation is that they can’t leave the country. If you leave, we will buy the vehicle back at a preset price.”
“That's amazing. Thank you so much for that. Fuel prices have been so high it costs more than rent.”
“You're welcome. You've all been shown to your lodgings and those will be where you will stay for now. Eventually we will be building an apartment house where everyone will be assigned a place based on what they need. There will be a gym, laundry will be done, all you will have to do is get the bags filled and set them just inside your door, there will be a playground for children as well as a picnic area for gatherings. A pool will be available 24/7 and we will have that monitored so it will be safe. This will also be part of a manager's benefit package. For those who want to purchase a house as one becomes available, you will receive an allowance if you don't use the provided housing.”
There was a low buzz in the background, and it was obvious they were all very excited. Many of the companies on Earth were greedy and did not take care of their employees well. Their kind believed in a fair profit and taking good care of customers and employees. Even with that outlook they were making a serious profit. So far it appeared that buying this country had been a really good decision. It made Ranger wonder if there were other countries for sale near here. Maybe they could buy a path to the ocean.
They’d discussed a fish plant here, but it was easier if they had their own fishing fleet, and direct access to the ocean. He needed to find out about who had brokered the deal to buy this country. It seemed they would be the best to continue to look for more property around them. Ranger was certain the emperor would help him if he saw that this would be a good plan for them. Yes, it was great to help people, but it had to work out for them as well because they had a lot of people on their planet depending on them.
He'd been lost in his thoughts, the meeting had ended. Now it was time for the last part of it. “What were you thinking about?” Carler asked.
“It's something I've been thinking about a lot. When we first started looking for a country, we talked about one where we could put a fish plant. While I'll admit we could put one here, it's not ideal. It would be so much better if we could find a way to get access to the ocean. My thought was, could we find another country that would connect us to that ocean?”
“And what was your answer?” Ditso asked.
“I'm glad you asked. I'm placing you in charge of finding out who made this deal for us and seeing if they could come up with another deal for us. It will be just a small additional task.”
Everyone looked at did so and smirked. They were all glad they've not shown too much interest because everyone had all the work that they could handle and now Ditso had just a little bit more.
“It would be my honor to get more information about this.” He agreed.
Ranger stood to dismiss his people, but Carler stood too. When his second had seen that he was standing as well he just shrugged and sat back down. It was easy to see that this was going to cause confusion between them. What was there to say, it was his fault for switching roles and it was hard to switch back at least it was for Carler. those who wanted more food could grab a plate and take it up to their room or even sit down in here and talk to some of the others that weren't ready to leave yet.
Ranger grabbed a plate in a drink and headed up to his room. He was going to do anything he wanted to since he was king of this country. Once he got to his room, he turned on his TV and checked out the news to see if there was anything exciting and new going on in the world. He had to admit Earth was a crazy planet and you never knew what might happen.
By the time he was ready to go to bed, his food was eaten, and his drink was gone. He turned all the lights off, not that he needed them on anyway and then went to bed. In many ways it had been an exciting night and he hoped tomorrow wouldn't be as exciting as he was afraid it might be. He just had a bad feeling about Toni.
An alarm went off, he heard it and it was annoying. Just for a second, he considered frying it. After a second thought he was glad he hadn't. There was no doubt that would have set off the fire alarm which was even more annoying than the clock alarm. Ranger had a lot of annoying things that he was going to have to get used to. Being around a lot of other people wouldn't be a problem since he had lived in a castle much of the time. It was some of the tools that humans used that were annoying and some of the things that they did.
He got ready and walked by Toni’s place. Taking a deep breath, he realized she was already gone and that was all right. Moving on, he made it to the meeting room as others were also coming in. Everyone's place was once again marked because if they weren't marked someone inevitably decided that they needed to sit at the head of the table or next to whoever was there. It always seemed to take them a while to figure out where the area they were going to sit was. Since all of his people that were here were in the military, most things were done in military order.
Toni had found her seat and already had her food and was nibbling on it. He wished she would eat better and if she became a dragon later, he knew she would.
Chapter 2
Her New Job
Toni had just made it to the meeting room, and she had her folder with her. She was very hungry, so she grabbed some food, a couple drinks, and began to eat. She heard somebody's throat clearing and looked up to see Zaya looking at her.
“Where were you last night?” She asked.
This needed to be answered carefully in a way that didn't make her look stupid and didn't make it look like she was being treated specially when she thought she might be. “I was following the instructions I was given. They also told me not to worry about what anyone else was up to and just keep my attention on what I was supposed to do.” Toni was usually much nicer and Zaya was always trying to pump her for information or make her feel stupid. Besides when they had gotten all their new people together and talked to them that was exactly what they were told.
Zaya turned red then went and got her plate and sat down in her seat which unfortunately was directly across from her. Apparently, something had happened last night, and she'd been excluded. maybe there was a good reason, and she would wait until she asked before she worried about it. people began to come in at a steady pace now including some of the leaders. Maybe she would get lucky and Zaya would ask one of the leaders why everyone was not there. She didn't think it would work very well for her, but some people had to learn the hard way and eventually she was sure that's what would happen with Zaya.
She looked up because she sensed Ranger had come in. Toni looked around just a little bit and there he was. Even though Carler was supposed to be in charge it was funny that Ranger always sat at the head of the table. The moment Ranger was in place, Carler stood up and got things started.
“Does everyone have their folders?” Everyone began to say yes. “Once we are done with eating, everyone will break into groups and the leaders of your areas are at the top of the front page of your folder. You will all gather around your leader, and they will decide where they're going to take you to get the project started. Any questions?”
Zaya gasped. “Am I reading this right? Are Ranger and Toni in charge of the parks project?”
Toni hadn't looked at her folder yet and was surprised so she opened it and saw that it was true.
“Yes, you are reading that right. Is it a problem?” Carler was obviously annoyed by the question.
