“Who hired you?”

“I believe her name was Kitty.” Amy offered.

She was hired by the Empress. That would make it very difficult to wrest her away from them. This doctor would be perfect for what he needed if only he could talk them into letting her stay here. She could begin to study the genetics of those dragons from this planet, but she could also cover the medical needs of the resort and if she had time once the college opened, she could even help there. It was a shame he couldn't find two more just like her.

Hiring personnel like this was clearly difficult and Kitty obviously was exceptionally good at it. It made him wonder if Toni might be good at that too. Getting the right people to fill those positions where they needed them would make everything so much easier. Of course, he needed to keep in mind that his mate was still a little angry at him. He had to admit he deserved it at least to himself anyway.

Chapter 7

Rogues

Was it finally over? Toni could only hope that it was. This was the first meeting since the doctor had said that the signs of changing seemed to be gone. It was breakfast and everyone was staring at her because she was by gosh hungry and not going to starve because they were intimidated by a female with an appetite. Ranger was even giving her the look. It was the one that said he just absolutely could not believe it. Well, he had changed her, and her dragon was a hungry one, so he had better get used to it.

“How have things been going out at the parks now?” Ranger asked although she was sure he knew better than they did.

“Whatever you've done seems to have made a huge difference. There are only signs occasionally and they may be signs of fighting by whoever you put in charge there.” Bobby explained.

Ranger seemed to like the young guy. He was one of the few who would speak up without being called on. “I'm glad to hear it. Any other specific difficulties that we should be discussing?”

“I almost hate to say that everything seems to be going well because sometimes that seems to make something come up. But as far as I know everything is going according to plan.” Once again it was Bobby that answered.

“I'm glad to hear that. Does that mean that everyone is where they need to be?”

A mousy little thing held up her hand. Ranger called on her. “I'm with the group that is restocking the animals. That is not going as well as we had hoped for, but we have left that up largely to nature.”

“Your name?” It was no surprise that Ranger couldn't remember her name since she never spoke and generally tried to hide at the back of the group.

“Sandy.”

“OK Sandy. Do you feel like it's at the point that a little bit of medical intervention would be helpful?”

“I do, but Doc thinks it's too early. My personal feeling was that we should check in to one pair and make sure that this is not a problem that will affect all future matings. I just prefer to be on the safe side and not find out a year down the road that this was something we could have found and dealt with.”

“It doesn't seem to me that it would hurt to check into it. Why doesn't Doc want to?” Toni asked.

“He has a pet project that he is working on and while it is important too, I told him that he could get whatever assistance he needed in order to handle both. For some reason he is reluctant to ask for help.” Sandy explained.

“What do you think that means?” Toni asked.

“My guess would be that he is used to these programs where funds and assistance is always limited, and he is afraid to ask because he thinks that his special project will be pulled.”

“And how do you think we should deal with that?”

Sandy turned red because everyone was watching her now. “My suggestion would be to bring in the extra help and tell him it is because you are aware that he has several projects and needs to divide up for them and if you bring in people that are working toward their doctorate since we do have a college going in, it might serve two purposes."

“I like the way you think. You and I will discuss this with the head of the college and see if they can accommodate us.” Tony observed.

Sandy had done well and set herself apart from the crowd. Why didn't she look happier? Maybe it was because she was just so shy. It was a shame if she would let that interfere with her potential success in moving up through the ranks. It was up to her if she succeeded or failed as personal success was always that, personal, to the person.

Toni still felt off and not quite herself and maybe that was because she no longer was herself. She was dealing with an inner voice oh not the usual voice people dealt with. This one was insistent, opinionated, and often disagreed with her. What kind of alter ego wants that? There was also this need to fly free and she hoped that it wasn't a voice wanting to commit suicide. Just yesterday she had stood on the roof and wanted to jump. That's why she had left rather quickly without a word to anyone. The need to fly had been so strong she had been afraid that she couldn't hold it back anymore if she stayed where she was.

Ranger came to get her after the meeting was over. She thought they would drive out to the park, but they went someplace else.” Come, let's go for a walk.” He suggested.

She was sure he wanted her to see something, so she followed him. The further they went, the less there was to see. Finally, he came to a stop. “It is time to see how far you will morph.” Ranger observed.

“I don't know how.”

“Come here.” He directed and she wanted to see what would happen, so she did.
