“He made me angry because I was really hungry and looking forward to this meal. That's why I'm going to go back and sit down and finish my food.”
That's exactly what she did. As he watched she turned and walked to the table and sat down in front of her plate and began to eat. He did not notice this before but apparently Toni took her food very seriously. Security was handling things, so he went back and sat down with her and began to finish his food too. Before he sat down, he noticed the waitress had come and Tony had ordered two more drinks. He could hardly blame her. When he started to reach over to take one of them, she shook her head.
“I didn't know you wanted one and both of these are for me.”
“Well, alrighty.” Maybe he'd been watching too many of the wrong kind of movies because he hadn't planned to say that.
Toni hadn’t acted like I had expected she would, and she still wasn't. Could this be a form of shock that she was trying to deal with? Maybe she was just getting tired of being picked on and was ready to do a little picking back? Whatever it was there was nothing we could do until after we finished our meal and got back to our office where we could talk frankly about everything that was going on right now.
The meal was a good one and he was glad they had gotten back to it before it had been cold as ice. Maybe he could understand why she had been upset that someone had interfered with what was a nice romantic and tasty meal. They both ate concentrating completely on their incredible food. He was done first even though his meal was larger, but she seemed to be taking the time to thoroughly enjoy hers. When she was done, he paid a cash tip and this bill would go on his account.
It amazed him that the other customers had all gone back to their meal as if they had just seen a show. Maybe that's what some of them thought had occurred and he was fine with that but surely some of them knew that they had just witnessed an attempted criminal action. Looking around, a few of the people that had been there when the man had broken in were still there but did not look like they had just felt threatened. Maybe it was because he told them he was not looking for them and none of them would be hurt? Humans were impossible to figure out as a group. He only hoped he could figure out his human in time to cement their mating.
They headed to the office and they both sat down at their desks. He waited a moment to see if Toni would begin this discussion. Finally, he realized that wasn't going to happen.
“We are not yet sure who attempted this.” Ranger admitted. “Someone is questioning him, but he acts crazy. Those questioning him aren't sure if it's an act or if he really is off the track. Do you have any suggestions on what we might do?”
“Maybe I should talk to him? Since I am who he was after maybe he would let something slip to me that would be helpful. There is no one I can think of that would come after me but old Joe.”
“That is what I was thinking unless it is something about the job. Not everyone in this country would like to see parks put in. I think I would be a better target, but I don't know what criteria they use to decide who they will go after.”
“You and I are both team leaders. Why would you make a better target?”
“Because I have some rights of ownership.”
“You own the parks.” Toni asked.
“It's complicated. Once they are set-up as parks, they will belong to the residents of the country. But I have a position with the government as well as working a job and in my position, I will be one of the people that is giving the land to the parks. Do you understand?”
“It sounds like a president or a king bequeathing land for certain uses.”
“Great, you do understand. It's similar to that.” Ranger explained.
“So, what is your position exactly?”
“We have an absolute ruler. He is above all others. There is a group of people that are all directly under him and I am one of those. When it comes to the divisions of the land here, I have a great deal of control over that. That control is given to me by the highest level. we are not really supposed to talk about those things outside of those that are part of the government because people in the past have tried to take advantage of it. You'll need not to speak of this away from this room. It could have devastating results.”
“This seems a little crazy.”
“Not crazy, but to you it is unfamiliar and a different way of doing things. If you knew all the things your own government did, you would probably find that even crazier. At least we are trying to be fair with the people and see that they get things that they can use and things that support them. But it is not surprising that there are people that would not like the way we were doing things. Some people want to keep everything for themselves, and they don't care if the average person has anything at all.” He explained but he knew when she found out everything, she would be angrier at him. He had a feeling that she never wanted to be a queen and that when she mated him that was exactly what she would be.
“You never answered what your opinion was on me going to talk to this man.” Toni pointed out.
“I'm not sure I would feel safe about you doing this. But I also see that you are determined to do so. I will check with the guards and see that everything is made as safe as possible and then we will go visit our little troublemaker. Maybe he will have developed a respect for you for the way you dealt with him.”
The decision was made and although he was not happy with it, he would see her through this safely. She might be right he might give her information because seeing her would probably throw him off. Ranger made a few calls and explained what he wanted, and they began to scurry around to get everything completed and said they would call him back as soon as the room was ready for her to interrogate their suspect.
He would feel better if she was a dragon, but she was not. That was something that would make him feel better in more ways than one. When they had hired her, Ranger had checked her background and he knew this was not something she had ever done before. She did have a variety of experiences in her resume, and he knew she would be able to help in a large number of areas. Since this was personal, and it was also something a queen might be called upon to do, maybe this was just a way to stretch her abilities.
It wasn't that much longer before he got the notification, and they were ready for them. “Toni, they called, and we can go in now.”
She got out of her chair, and he held out his hand to her and led her to one of the meeting rooms. He would stay here with her because there was no way he was going to leave her in here with that crazy guy.
“Toni,” the machine gun guy said. “I'm glad you came because we really need to talk. Can you get this guy to leave he's probably one of them.”
“I'm not sure what you're talking about.”
“They are dragons, real fire breathing winged creatures. This guy, Joe somebody, he told me you're in danger because you don't know that you're in a nest of dragons.”
