A few seconds ticked past before she spoke again. “It’s good coming home again, isn’t it?”

Chandler gave her a side glance, not sure how to answer, so he went with, “Yeah.”

“I had all these big dreams of what life would be like in California when Trent and I moved out there after we got married.” A heavy pause hung in the air until she broke it with a snort of her own. “God. I was such an idiot. I was so desperate to get out of here and get away from my stifling family that I jumped into marriage way too fast.”

Sipping his hot chocolate, Chandler listened but didn’t respond, knowing she needed to get this out.

“He was such a man-child. Irresponsible, immature. And I was too young and dumb to figure it out until it was too late. I finally got the message, though. Moved back here to Virginia, did my training in dog grooming, and saved up enough to start Perfect Paws. The rest is history.”

“You’ve done amazingly well for yourself,” Chandler said at last. “I’m proud of you.”

“Yeah?” She smiled at him.

“Yeah.” And deep down inside he was. More than he should be, but there was no bursting the bubble of happiness now. He couldn’t help himself. He just enjoyed being with her.
