"Is there someone on the back of one of them?" I put a hand to my forehead to shield my eyes.

"More than one," Bain said. "There's at least three being ridden. The fourth— I can’t tell." He sounded frustrated, but that was the least of our problems from where I stood.

"What does this mean?" I asked. "Have they tamed them, or…"

"They're shifters," Bain finished for me.

"So this is either great news, or we're slightly more fucked than we were before," I said. Great. Shifter's claws were just as big, and probably as sharp as anactualdragon.

"Yeah. Dragon shifters are smarter than an animal," Bain said.

"Wonderful," I muttered. "There's still time to run."

He grabbed my hand in his big, warm one. Reassurance rushed through me like power in a field of roses.

"I'm not leaving you behind," he growled. "Whatever happens, we face it together." To Slade, he said, "You can run if you want to. You're only a few hours behind the others."

Slade shook his head. "I'll stay," he said. "I've never met a dragon shifter before. That I know of."

I stared at him for a moment. He seemed absolutely fascinated. More, he seemed excited at the idea. He was either more of a badass than I guessed, or he was out of his mind. I couldn't rule out the possibility he might be both.

I shook my head. "Last chance," I told him. The dragons had obviously seen us, they were heading right for us. If he shifted and loped away, they'd know.

He flashed me a grin. "Thanks. We'll be fine. Don't worry."

And just like that, all my fear melted away.Not.

I appreciated his effort, but the dust from the ground started to whirl around as the dragons came in to land.

I caught Bain's expression in the corner of my eye and turned to him. He looked surprised. Well, as surprised as he could ever look. It wasn’t much more than a slight eyebrow twitch. Enough to put me further on edge.

What the fuck?

"Latika." He nodded his head forward.

I jerked my head back around and my mouth dropped open..

"Well shit, you're right." Now she was closer, I made out the assassin. The other two riders were her daughters, Aisha and Erin. Assassins in training, they were as tough as their mother.

"That has to be good, right?" Unless they turned on us since I saw them last.

"I hope so," Bain said. He stepped forward as the lead dragon landed. He saluted Latika with a fist to his chest as she slid down to the ground.

"I was hoping I would find you here," she said. "Although, notrighthere." She gestured around the sparsely vegetated area.

"We had an incident with the car," Bain said dryly.

"So I saw." She gave me a slight nod. "Viva."

I smiled. "Hey. Nice ride."

One of her eyebrows twitched. "Thanks."

I suspected sitting on the back of a dragon would give anyone a sore ass after a while. She would probably never admit it. Neither would I, but I wondered if dragons vibrated like motorcycles did.

I barely finished that thought when the dragon shifted into one of the most beautiful women I ever saw. If I swung that way, she'd totally makemevibrate.

Slade looked at her with curiosity, but Bain hardly seemed to notice the gorgeous, naked woman standing in front of him. Weird, but maybe he wasn't into women with long, thick black hair, brilliant blue eyes, and breasts for days.
