"Take all the power you need."

"You have a lot of faith that you smell good," I said. What can I say? Jokes helped to steady my nerves.

"I know I do," he replied. "You've been using me to draw power since we met."

"Says you," I muttered. He wasn't wrong though. He always smelled good. Not enough to counteract bad smells, but enough to deal with a stray dragon.

Bain chuckled.

"For the record," I said so they could all hear, "Knox and Slade smell pretty good too."

Slade smelled of lavender, which was unusual for a guy. When mixed with guy scent, it was pretty damn good.

"Of course we do," Knox said. He still gripped my arm. "You've got this."

I gave a slight nod. "I hope so. Because if I don't, we're all screwed."

I focused on the dragon and drew from all three of the guys. As far as I had ever been able to tell, it never did them any harm, but I spread it out, just in case.

I aimed the power at one of the dragon's wings. Just enough to give it a flick.

The dragon jerked and growled.

"That pissed it off," I said.

It was still coming, though.

I flicked the other wing.

The dragon shook it off and growled more deeply. If dragons breathed fire, this one would have curls of smoke coming out its nose.

Wait.

"Dragons don't breathe fire, do they?" I asked.

"No," Slade replied.

"Or spit acid?" I drew again and flicked the dragon harder. This time in the face.

"Nothing like that," Slade said over the roar of the dragon. "They just hunt and eat things. And people."

"Great," I said sarcastically. "They're hard to deter, too."

The dragon broke off, but circled around again.

Looking for a weakness, I presumed.Good luck with that, I thought at it. Sarcastically, of course, because I don't have a death wish.

"Have you got a gun, or a bow?" I asked. "A shot might scare it off."

Or we could just shoot the dragon, but I didn't want to kill it unless it was a last resort.

"Greg, get the gun," Slade said.

Greg grunted. He was standing on the other side of the car, out of harm's way. Smart move.

The dragon came around again, lower this time.

"It's starving," Bain said softly. "I can feel his hunger. Desperation. Fear."
