"Right." Was that a test of some kind, to see what I could do? Admittedly, I was curious too. If the hemitheos would stop trying to attack me, I might even learn a thing or two.

Knox patted my hand. "It's a good thing. It just means it wants to eat us."

I shook my head. "That's a good thing? I don't feel like being eaten today." Not like that. "A shifter might just want to make friends."

"Not likely," Bain said.

"Easier to kill an animal," Gorilla Guy grunted.

"I suppose so," I said, not convinced. I wasn't the biggest fan of killing anyone or anything. I mean, better the dragon than us, but if it could fly off now, that would be great.

"Maybe we could scare it away?" I suggested.

"Greg could stick his face out the window," Slade said.

Gorilla Guy grunted.

I bit back a snort. Gorilla Guy's name was Greg?

At least Slade had a sense of humour.

"You first," Greg said.

And Greg had one too. Good for them. I seemed to have left mine behind on the road somewhere, because I didn't find a fucking great, hungry dragon all that funny.

"Try your power?" Knox suggested. "That might be enough to frighten it."

"It certainly didn't like it a minute ago," I agreed. "But I think we need to stop so I can get a better aim."

I didn't much care for the role of sitting duck either, but we had a shot with this. If I failed…

I wouldn't think about that. Failing would suck donkey balls. Being eaten by a dragon would be worse than drowning in the bath. I wasn't sure how, but I was sure it was.

Something about big teeth crunching my bones and shit like that. Hard pass.

Slade gave a curt nod, then swung the wheel off to the side of the road. Later, I might wonder why he didn't stop in the middle of the road. It wasn't as though we had to get out of the way of traffic.

"Now would be a great time for guys on bikes to attack," I said. "And by attack, I mean become a snack while we drive away."

Knox smiled. "It would be, but the road looks empty for hours behind and in front of us."

"At least we know they won't attack while we're occupied with the dragon," Bain said.

"In theory," I muttered. I wouldn't assume anything. Although, if anyone knew this stuff, it was Bain.

"There's nothing out here," Slade said. "If anyone tries anything, we'll know a long time before it happens."

"Good to know." I pushed the door open when the car came to a full stop. "Here goes nothing."

Knox stepped out beside me and grabbed my arm to keep me close to the car.

"Don't make yourself an easy target," he said near my ear.

"The last thing I am is easy," I agreed. I saw him give me a look from the corner of my eye, but I kept my attention on the dragon.

He flew over the car in ever decreasing circles, eyes fixed on us.

I was vaguely aware of Bain and Slade, who both got out and moved to stand near me. What they planned to do, I had no idea, until Bain spoke.
