"Yeah." My voice sounded distant in my own ears. "I feel funny."

I closed my eyes and stood still while my stomach churned like an old washing machine.

"Viva?" Knox sounded worried. "She looks like she's going to pass out. Here."

Someone, I guessed it was Knox from the citrusy scent, scooped me up in his arms. "She needs to lie down."

"Viva?" Bain spoke close to my ear, his voice soft.

What felt like a hand brushed hair off my face and caressed my forehead.

"She doesn't feel hot," Bain said.

That's where you're wrong, buddy, I thought.I'm very hot. I might not be feverish, but I am still smokin'. Also, since when are you a doctor of any kind?

I murmured something incoherent.

"Bring her this way." Slade didn't sound worried. Should I be offended by that, or just suspicious as to why he wouldn't care if a guest got sick while in his Keep?

Everything in me wanted to scream at Knox to carry me in the opposite direction to wherever Slade said to take me. I had no idea what he was up to, but the nice guy act was just that, an act. Did he really need glasses? That might be a part of the pretence. Who was scared of guys with glasses? Unless they were sunglasses and the guy held a gun. Then, you know, run likefuck.

"It's okay," Knox whispered. "You're going to be fine." He sounded so sweet and caring, I wanted to cry.

I couldn't guarantee he would be okay if we kept on in this direction. I tried to open my eyes, but they wouldn't obey. No words would come out of my mouth.

What in fuck was wrong with me? I tried to inhale and draw power, but I struggled with more than a shallow breath. No power came, not even a drop. I couldn't smell anything bad. Nothing which would block me from drawing.

I had never experienced anything like it and it scared the shit out of me.

"Bring her over here," Bain said.

He didn't sound as worried as Knox. That set off something in my brain. He worked with Helene, helped her to take me. He claimed it was part of a plan to catch her, that he sent Knox to keep me safe. I never fully ruled out the possibility that he was full of crap. He might have wanted Helene to take me. He might have sent Knox hoping the Hemithea would kill him. This might be another part of some kind of plan.

I tried to speak, or scream, or something, but no words would come.

"It's okay," Knox said. "Try to relax. We'll get a doctor."

"She'll be fine," Bain said.

Would I? Or was he just saying he didn't want me to get help?

Oh, Hades, what the fuck was he up to? If I survived this, I was going to rip off his kneecaps and feed them to a dragon.

If I didn't survive, I would come back as a pale one and still rip off his kneecaps.

"Did she eat something she shouldn't?" Wesley asked. "I ate a mushroom once that made me see dancing potatoes twirling pizza dough on their hands."

I would have laughed if I could. That must have been one Hades of a trip.

"Don't eat the mushrooms, Wesley," Bain said.

"Oh, I didn't after that," Wesley said. "But Viva—"

"Didn't eat anything the rest of us didn't," Bain finished for him.

Unless someone slipped something into my food. Something which would only affect someone with the power.

"It was a long journey, she's probably very tired," Bain added.
